1. Find a game that you like- You don't have to be an athlete (if you are reading this, you probably aren't; don't worry, I am not either). It's always nice to engage in some kind of activity that requires you to run around a little. In addition to being good for your health, you just feel great when you're finished. The stiffness is gone from your legs, you inhaled a good amount of fresh air, and nothing sounds better than a nice, cold shower. I love playing tennis and there have been times when the only exercise I'd get is from this game itself.
It's best to find a partner who is at about your level (that way you won't take it hard if he beats you easily or you won't be bored if he just plain sucks). If you're someone that doesn't play a lot of sports, start small. Take a racket and a tennis ball and practice against the wall until you feel confident enough to practice with a partner. Or just grab a basketball and shoot around before you start playing with your friends. No one expects you to be great, they just want to have fun and enjoy your company. It's a great way to spend time with your friends as well. Pretty soon, you will find that it is quite easy to exercise.
2. Start working out- There is no reason to go all out. If you're in college, you probably have prepaid access to the school gym. Start going there, maybe read a few of the guidelines that are posted, and just get into it. There's no need for a max. workout. Just do whatever you enjoy doing be it running on the treadmill, lifting weights, or even swimming.
Remember, anything you do should be in moderation. Going over your limit will not make you buff, it'll only injure you and maybe even discourage you from working out again.
These things will take time, which is why you should find something you enjoy and stick with it. Again, it is important to know what you're doing so that you don't harm your body in any way. Don't shy away from asking people around you for a little advise. They were probably once like you and will be more than happy to help in any way they can.
Like playing a sport, it's good to have a partner. I think I owe however nice my body looks to one of my best friends. He got me to go the gym during the summer and worked out with me 2-3 times every week.
When I returned to school the following autumn, people were surprised by the kind of body I had. Having a friend work out with you is great motivation and just makes working out more fun.
3. Work in push ups and crunches into your daily routine- Everyday or two, try and devote just 15 minutes to a series of push-ups, sit-ups, and crunches. You may not feel anything for the first few days, but soon it'll start to kick in.
Remember, there is no harm in starting small (in fact, I'd recommend it to prevent laziness and discouragement). Because even if 10 push ups is a very small number, you will become so good at it that you will want to do more. I am very lazy! It takes all my self motivation to get me into continuing this routine. Because it is summer vacation, I am at home and not able to go to the school gym, so I have to work out on my own.
Every other day, I start my 'program' if you must, with 30 push ups, do my ab exercises (you can find several on youtube) and then another 30. I am trying to work in 15 more in the middle of my abs work out. It really isn't that hard to get started, but as it gets warmer, it does take a little work to be consistent at it. Best time to do it is in the morning if you like to shower early in the day. Once you're clean, you're probably not gonna want to do it. If you take multiple showers during the day, then you really have no excuse not to do this.
4. Jog- Jogging is definitely one of the best forms of exercise out there. You really can't injure yourself doing this and a bonus is you can take in some good sights and can easily switch things up.
Monday, you go to the park and job. Tuesday, you go to the beach and jog. Wednesday, you feel like saving some money on gas so just do a quick run around your neighborhood. And of course you can bring a Ipod Nano or Ipod shuffle along for your trip and rock out to your favourite tracks while sweating it out. And if you are lucky, you get to see a babe jogging past you as well, just don't run into the tree when this happens.
Point is it really isn't that hard to exercise. You feel great at the end. You look better. Your confidence has gone up. It's almost too good to be true. Maybe it is. Only one way to find out.
