Guide to Installing a Gutter Liner

Mary Lamphere
The installation of a gutter line can provide a quick and relatively inexpensive fix to small holes in your home's gutter system. In addition to providing a fix to minor imperfections, a gutter line can also prolong the life of your gutters by up to 10 more years. If you don't know how to install a gutter liner then the first time will be a bit time consuming but otherwise this is an easy home improvement task that can be completed in a matter of half an hour or less depending on the length of the gutter area that you are trying to fix.

To Install a Gutter Liner

Begin by placing the ladder on a flat surface near the area of the gutter where you will be installing a gutter liner. Carefully, climb the ladder and begin removing the section of gutter that is damaged and needs repair. You will likely use a screwdriver to remove the hardware that is attaching the gutter to the main house support.

Using the gutter liner as a guide, determine if your home's gutter system is wide enough to handle the entire width of the gutter liner or if you will need to trim the liner down a bit to fit smoothly into the gutter. If the gutter liner does not fit smoothly then you will need to use the scissors to trim the liner down so that it can fit into the gutter system.

Installing the gutter liner into the gutter system is rather easy once you have fitted it in place. Measure the length of the area that you will be lining. It's best to measure the entire length of the gutter so that the liner can be placed on the entire liner.

Lay gutter liner below the hangers for the gutters so that the entire section of gutter is fully lined. This is essentially sealing the holes that are in your gutter system. Using the caulk gun and the adhesive that comes with the gutter liner you can attach the remaining gutter pieces. End caps, corner pieces or other gutter pieces can be attached using the caulk gun with the adhesive.

Using the caulk gun, apply adhesive to the gutter in the area where the downspout adapter or corner piece is to be placed and then attach the remaining gutter piece or section. Allow the adhesive to dry for at least 1 hour before attaching additional pieces and hanging the gutter back onto the hanging system.
