Beginner Music Lesson Tips

Starting piano lessons as a youth, adult, or revisiting the piano takes effort. Daily practice is required to play scales, songs, and full length musical pieces. You may not have mastered the first few scales or have yet to turn a page of sheet music. Here are a few tips to help you learn to play the piano faster.

Hand Strengthening Exercises

Weak wrists and hand muscles are the reasons some musicians can play better. Working daily on your coordination through hand strengthening exercises will make it easier for you to move from single count notes to more complex variations of notes. Keeping your wrists somewhat stable while changing notes often is imperative to play notes in time.

Dexterity

Playing the piano requires the ability to reach. Each finger should be able to extend out to reach its complete range of motion. Each extra millimeter that you finger can quickly extend will help you when reading piano sheet music.

Metronome

Investing in a metronome can help you to keep the correct time while playing the piano. Many beginner piano players have a bad habit of slowing down when faster finger work is required. Tapping your foot in addition to the metronome and counting in your head can help you to stick to the correct timing. Use the metronome when learning how to count different times of music.

Playing Piano Faster

Increasing your speed by being able to coordinate touching each note in proper time can help you to play piano faster. Before beginning to play the piano, exercise your wrist and hands. After playing gently warm down by doing a few sets of hand exercises to prevent injury.

Daily Practice

Practice the piano often. If you do not have access to a piano at home, purchase a keyboard. Keyboards are great inexpensive alternatives to large expensive pianos. Aim to practice for at least fifteen minutes or more each day. Master easy scales, and move on to more complicated warm ups and pieces of sheet music.

Ignore the progression of other piano players. Keep a record of your piano playing progress. For example if it takes you one week to learn a new song, do not feel bad or quit because other people have picked up on the material faster. There may be other factors involved in their progress. They may practice more often than you, have had previous musical experience, or have natural musical ability.

Having a strong wrist and finger dexterity can help your body to perform optimally. Being physically able to push yourself to perform on the piano is important. Use your improved hand coordination and the metronome to help you play piano faster.
