The first step to living abroad for a short to is to decide on which country. After that you will need to decide on the city. It is generally a good idea to pick a city that is about the same size as the one you currently live in. This is because getting used to life in a new culture is hard enough without getting used to life in an area with a vastly different population. Some key factors that may help you decide which country you would like to visit are having already studied the language, having ancestors or friends from there, or a rise in prosperity of that nation that may help you in the future.
After you have decided which country and city you would like to live in for a short time, the next step is to decide if you would like to do it alone, or with the help of an organization. If you are young organizations may provide you with scholarships, and or arrange host families for you to stay with. These organizations are generally a good idea if they are available to you, but if not then you should make sure that you have enough funds to cover you living expenses. As a side note, if you choose to be sponsored by an organization then be prepared to follow all of their rules (many exchange organizations have rules that may seem ridiculous). Moreover, do not assume that you can get a job there fast or even at all. In many countries throughout the world it is quite hard for foreigners to find short term jobs.
From here on out if you have chosen to go with an organization, then they will probably handle everything and you can quit reading this how-to. However, if you have chosen to sponsor yourself then you should read on. Staying with a host family is probably the best bet. This is because by living with them you pick up a great amount of culture that you otherwise would not have picked up. Many countries allow au pairs to take care of small children for a family. Not only does this provide you with room and board, but most au pairs get roughly 200 dollars a month. By becoming an au pair you would not need to start with a great amount of money.
Before you depart to a foreign land it is a very good idea to make some attempts to learn the language. Even if you aren't that skilled in the foreign language the locals will greatly appreciate your efforts to learn their language (and more than likely, your funny accent as well). Cultural books will also prepare your for the journey that lays ahead of you. After you have prepared your mind for your trip, you can find the cheapest airfare by going to www.kayak.com. It is a service that scans all of the flights from different providers based upon the criteria that you input. It normally finds the cheapest fare.
The next step is to prepare your visa with the foreign country and get a passport if you do not already have one. Getting a visa in some foreign countries can be hard, and most of the times you need to decide what the purpose of your trip is. If you have a set purpose, that's excellent, if not, pick the one that best fits your purpose.
After you arrive in the foreign country, you should be able to slowly adjust to life there. It is a good idea to start making a lot of friends as soon as you can so that you can learn the culture more and expand your network of international connections. It is great to be able to plan vacations without having to have to plan a place to stay because you have made so many friends. After you have taken all of these steps you should be ready for the adventure of a life time!
