Guide to Neo Classical Design

Neo Classical is a European style that was mostly influenced by ancient Rome and Greece. It originated in the 18th century. Most of the furniture from this period is geometrical with plenty of curves and arches. Baroque, Rococo style, and Louis XVI style furniture with geometrical shapes are found in neo classical style. You can see this in chairs, sofas, and other furniture. This popular furniture consists of fluted legs with special designs carved in them. Some of the furniture gives off a sense of royalty. Chairs and sofas may resemble thrones. Architectural details are typically found in neo classical design and are now also known as traditional architecture. You should look for items like arched palladian windows, decorative columns, circular windows, oval rooms, ceiling medallion, cornices, and molding.

When designing a neo classical room you will want to choose colors that are calming. Pale colors like cream, stone gray, pale blue, pink, and white are just a few examples. You can use one or two stronger colors in your design palette. If you decided to do this, remember to use them sparingly. For example, black or terra cotta can be used for a Greek influence. Deep red and gold can be used for an imperial Roman influence.

Floor choices for neo classical should include options like pine, stone, or marble. Woven Rugs that are Persian with floral patterns can be used. Fabrics and wallpaper should have patterns like swags, garland, floral, berry patterns, and other dark symmetrical shapes in a classical style. Fabrics in silk or damask are great choices as well. Some wallpaper or murals depict mythological scenes in the designs.

Accents of gold, crystal, iron works, statues, urns, and Greek or Roman antiquity are used. Console tables and ornamental floor mirrors with gild woodcarvings and mercury glass are typical items found in neo classical. Add drama to your room with items like a drop chandelier, vases, table lamps, screens, and wall decals. Wall decals with geometric, floral, scroll, and other classic motifs work well in this design. Items used in this style should give off a historical feel and even a hint of mythology. Neo classical design looks back to the ideals of art and history of classical times. Details of this style are refined, delicate, and elegant.
