If I were coming into Lexington and looking for a good night out then the first goal would be food. Despite Lexington's size and relative obscurity in the grand scheme of things, Lexington does offer some very nice local restaurants. In the downtown area places such as Bellini's and the Woodland Grille offer high end dining at high-end prices. Woodland Grille would be my personal choice due to location (corner of Woodland and Main) and price range, which can be very reasonable considering the cosmopolitan atmosphere. Further down the line are restaurants such as Joe Bologna's, which serves Italian food and is located of West Maxwell Street in an old Church. On down Maxwell one will be entering the Chevy Chase area, which is fairly nice and relaxed. Local tastes in that area include Bourbon and Toulouse (Cajun) and Rio Con (Mexican).
The bars in the Chevy Chase area often provide live entertainment, bars which would include "Lynaghs" and "The Fish tank" both offer shows two nights a week or more. Most often the bands are local but from time to time a larger act comes through. Charlie Brown's is located next to Rio Con and serves as a bar/restaurant. If stopping in Charlie Brown's then try the wings, which are three for a dollar after 7pm, or perhaps one of the daily specials would also suit you. Charlie Browns is not fancy at all, but very relaxed and tends to be the perfect place to grab a quick bite to eat in between hitting the bars.
After grabbing a bite to eat and a drink to wet your whistle the Historic Kentucky Theatre is open late on the weekends and is perfect for catching a relaxing flick in style. The Kentucky Theatre Boasts a classic marquee style board complete with hundreds of light bulbs. Once inside the Kentucky theatre first timers will be amazed at the grandeur of Chandeliers and the like. The Kentucky only has a couple of screens but makes good use of them by getting rare and second run movies that often don't make it into larger theatres. After a show stop on into Common Grounds Coffee shop located on east High Street. Call it a night after that and walk to wherever you are going. Since Lexington tends to be so small and compact almost every location is within biking distance, however Lexington does have two fleets of taxis just waiting on the over indulged patrons to make their exists from the downtown bars at night.
Overall Lexington has much to offer. Whether just passing through of stopping in for a while, Lexington is just south enough for you to get a taste of the charm and just north enough to keep it. Surrounded by horse farms and lush pasture, Lexington is set apart from its surroundings and most would not expect it to have the nightlife it does. It is easy to drive through Lexington and not think much of it. But try walking through and I guarantee an entertaining experience.
