Pismo Beach Travel Guide: Things to Do
Since Pismo Beach celebrates the ocean, practically any ocean-related activity can be found here. Surf-fishing, sea kayaking, surfing, boogie boarding, fishing off the 1,200-foot long pier, sandcastle building, whale watching, scuba diving, and many more ocean-related things to do can be found in Pismo Beach.
Pismo has many land-based things to do for its visitors as well. The Oceano Dunes attracts quite a number of people to its sand dunes for camping, nature observation, and recreation. You can ride your ATV over the extensive sand dunes - one of the few places in California you can do so. In fact, the beach at Oceano Dunes SVRA is the last beach left in California where you can legally drive your car.
Other things to do in Pismo are horseback riding on the beach, golfing, Hummer beach & dunes tours, clamming, wildlife watching, and shopping. From November through February, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate to the Monarch Butterfly Grove and roost in huge clusters in the trees. If you are in the area during this time of year, this is a must-see. Tours are free.
Near Pismo Beach is Sycamore Mineral Hot Springs, where you can go to rent an outdoor mineral spring hot tub with a deck during the day or under the stars at night. They also offer spa treatments, accommodations, and various packages.
From Pismo Beach you can take wine tasting tours in the nearby Edna Valley, increasingly recognized for its fine wines. Pismo Beach itself also has a winery and wine tasting room on Five Cities Drive. Ask about their annual Central Coast Wine Classic held in July.
Pismo Beach celebrates a variety of festivals and events during the year, including the Clam Festival, the 4th of July fireworks show off the pier, the October Jazz Festival, various kite boarding and surfing events, a weekly farmers' market, and outdoor art exhibits. Check the calendar on the Pismo Beach Visitor Center's website to see what's happening and when.
The Pismo Beach Visitors Information Center is located at 581 Dolliver Street (Hwy. 1) at Hinds Ave., near the tourist district. It is well worth a stop there at the beginning of your stay in Pismo Beach. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone them at 800-443-7778 or locally at 805-773-4382.

Post a CommentThis sounds like a nice place. Thanks.
PV love. In Beaumont, TX. Mom and I were not feeling well at all. Should be back in Lake Charles tomorrow!
Since I read Misty of Chincoteague when I was a girl, I've wanted to see those wild horses on an island.
I'll probably never see California in this life, but I imagine it has to be wonderful. Here in the Virginia area, there is an island where wild horses live. Now I'm not a horses kind-of-guy, but I can appreciate all the things you speak of.
Wow, you covered everything. Great write-up.
I've always loved the name and thought it must be a great place.
Pismo Beach sounds like an awesome place to visit! I've only been to California once, many years ago. :)
