Soccer is a great sport to become engaged in, and it is also a relatively easy game to understand and learn. The first step in learning more about the wonderful world of soccer is to learn how the team plays out on the field and what the positions and lines are. Here are useful tidbits of information to get you started on learning more about the game, and to becoming a soccer player yourself.

There are three lines plus the Goalie within the game of Soccer. This is very similar to a wide variety of other sports team.

-Forward - This is the offensive line. People who play on this line do the majority of the scoring and will be on the attack for the duration of the game. They need to be ready at any moment to make a mad dash to the net of the opposing team with one and only one intention, and that is to score a goal. A helpful skill for people who enjoy this position is fast sprinting skills as they need to be ready to sprint down the field for a pass to assist in a goal.

-Halfback - This line plays half the defence and half the forward positions. People in his line do the majority of running within the game. They run more than any other position, and are kept busy throughout the entire game. They are there to assist the forward line if they need help, and they are also there to assist the defensive line should they need assistance. This means they are running constantly from one end of the field to the other. They help the forwards score goals, and they help the defence prevent goals from being scored. There are other terms used for this line, but halfback is the most commonly used term. To be good in this position you should have solid long distance running stamina.

-Defense - This is the last line before the Goalie. People in this line have the huge responsibility of preventing the opposing team from getting near the goalie and making a shot on net. Their job is to get the soccer ball out of their defensive zone and back into the offensive zone, so the forwards can score. A strong defensive team will protect the goalie from having to make many saves as the opposing team will not be given the chance to shoot on net.

-Goalie - This is a position well known by many. This position guards the net and is there to prevent any goals from being scored by the opposing team. They are often the backbone of the team. A good goalie will have strong coordination skills with the ability to keep their eye on the ball.

Different coaches organize their teams differently with different numbers of forwards, halfbacks, and defence on any line. However, what works for one team may not work for the other as often it has to do with how people work together as a team. It is by learning more about the lines and positions with the game of soccer that you will become more confident with the game, and will be ready to start learning some basic skills.
