Guide to Sunscreen for Dogs

Sierra Koester
Dogs, like their human companions, can get sunburned. Sunburn can lead to skin cancer in dogs, just as it can in humans as well. Thus, it is important that you provide any dog that is at increased risk for sunburn with protection. Dogs who are at increased risk of getting sunburned include dogs who are white or have light-colored fur, bald dogs, and dogs who have very short fur. Here are some sunscreens for dogs you may want to consider using on your pet. However, please ask your veterinarian about the safety of any topical product before you use it on your companion.

Veterinarian's Best Sun Spray: Veterinarian's Best Sun Spray is one sun block for dogs you may want to consider using on your pet this summer. This sun block contains an SPF of 15 and provides adequate protection from the sun. You can use this spray on your dog's entire body, including his or her muzzle, ears, and nose.

You may purchase a 4 ounce spray bottle of Veterinarian's Best Sun Spray for approximately $4. This product is available for purchase from the Petstew website.

Doggles Pet Sunscreen: Doggles Pet Sunscreen is another sun block you may want to consider purchasing for your dog this summer. This sunscreen contains an SPF of 15. Not only can this product be used on light-colored dogs to prevent sunburn, but it can also be used on dark-colored dogs to prevent sun bleaching of their fur. Doggles Pet Sunscreen contains the ingredients Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate Dicaprate, DMDM Hydantion, distilled water, and Glyceryl Trioctanoate.

You may purchase a 2 ounce bottle of Doggles Pet Sunscreen for approximately $14. You may purchase this pet sunscreen on the Entirely Pets website.

Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen: Another sunscreen that may be used on dogs is Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen. According to this product, it is the only pet sunscreen that is FDA approved for use on dogs and horses. This sun block protects against UVA and UVB sun rays. Additionally, it is water and sweat proof. It also contains a vanilla scent and comes in a bottle with a bag on valve spray system, which can deliver sunscreen to your dog's skin at any angle you spray it.

This sunscreen for dogs is also environmentally friendly as it will not release any CFCs into the air. You may purchase a 4 ounce bottle of Epi-Pet Sun Protector Sunscreen from the Akersacres Pets website for approximately $22.50.

If you have a light-colored or white dog, a dog with short fur, or a bald companion, please use sunscreen on him or her this summer. Please remember to ask your veterinarian about the safety of any topical product before you use it on your pet. I hope you and your furry friend enjoy your summer!
