Surfing and Hawaii go hand in hand. If you will be visiting Hawaii, you should at least give surfing a try, or at least watch someone surf. Kauai has some great beaches for surfing for both the beginner and the expert. The following is guide to surfing on the island of Kauai.

If you are new to surfing, Kauai has some great surfing schools available to teach you the basics. Kauai Surf School, operating out of Poipu Beach, has a great deal of experience getting newbie's up on a board. They are a little pricey at $175 for a private lesson (group and kids lessons are cheaper). Margo Oberg Surfing School also operates out of Poipu Beach. Margo Oberg is a world champion surfer who has been giving surfing lessons for over thirty years. She enjoys surfing so much that she wants to spread that joy to her students, she guarantees everyone a good time. Private lessons with Margo Oberg are about $125. Titus Kinimaka's Hawaiian School of Surfing is located on the north shore in Hanalei. The Kinimaka School is run by native Kauaians with over fifty years of experience. They only offer group classes with a minimum of three people for about $65.

So now that you know how to surf, where do you go?

The north shore of Kauai features some great beaches for surfing. Winter is peak surfing season on the north shore and Hanalei Bay is one of the most popular surf spots in the world. Even though this is designated champion area, there are breaks for beginners in the bay. The left side of Lumaha'i Beach is also very popular for surfers, but conditions can be dangerous and is only recommended for experienced surfers. During the summer months, Kalihiwai Beach is a great place for beginner surfers to hone their craft, but come winter time leave this beach to the experts.

The south shore of Kauai also has some nice beaches for surfers as well. As one of the most popular beaches in all of Hawaii, Poipu Beach is perfect for all water sports, including surfing. Poipu Beach is great for beginner and expert surfers. Outside the reef at Kiahuna Beach is another great place for surfing on the south shore, but it is better suited for the more experienced surfer.

The more desolate west shore has only one nice surfing spot and that is at Pakala Beach. This beach is also known as Infinities because the ride seems to last forever. Surfing at Pakala Beach is only recommended for expert surfers.

Whether you are just learning or have been surfing for years, Kauai offers many alternatives to ride the wave. This guide to surfing on Kauai will lead you to your perfect surfing experience.
