Guide to Surviving in the World of Customer Service

Customer Service job means you need to be professional, happy, and personable at all times. You need to be able to brush things off and carry on, but most of all you need to enjoy working with people. So, how do you do that? Well, there are a couple things that can help you maintain your positive outlook and which will also allow you to continue enjoying your job.
  1. Smile! Even if you are doing Customer Service via the telephone, it is very easy to tell if a person isn't smiling over the phone. If you smile while talking to the customer they will hear it in your voice and often they will smile back. A great way to remind yourself to smile is to hang a small mirror at your desk in a spot where you will see it when you are talking. This will remind you to smile while you're assisting the customer.
  2. The Customer is always Right. This isn't necessary true, but sometimes if a customer is upset they just need to get things out and rant a bit. Don't interrupt them, but let them say it. Quite often once they're done with their tirade they will have run out of steam and will be a little more open to finding a solution that works for both parties.
  3. Treat each Customer as your FIRST customer. It may be your 50th customer of the day, but to them it's not the same. You are their first interaction with the company, and by treating each customer as your first you will ensure their first interaction with the company is a positive one, which will keep them coming back for more. Make sure you remain friendly and upbeat with each and every customer you speak with.
  4. Put yourself in their place. How would you like to be treated as a customer? Well, that's how you should treat all customers you deal with.
  5. Don't take it personally. As upset as a customer may be at times, and has hurtful as their remarks may seem, it's important to remember that these remarks are not intentionally meant to hurt you. They are misdirected anger, and the only way to survive in the wonderful world of customer service is to let it bounce off you. Do not take it personally.
  6. Under promise and Over deliver. You've heard this statement one too many times. However, it's a true statement in the world of customer service, and one which can earn you and the company major points with your consumers. Don't overpromise the product to your customer because if they end up with less than they expected it will end on a sour note, however if they end up with more than the expected they will be jumping up and down with joy, and you can bet this will be a good thing for your company.

Remember that Customer Service is not an easy job. However, as hard as it can be at times, it can also be one job that can be extremely rewarding. There is nothing as special as that feeling when you know you've done everything you can for a customer and have gone above and beyond. Even better, is when they recognize you for it, and although it may not be often that you are recognized it makes it all the more special.
