Guide to the Top 10 Secluded, Uncrowded Beaches Around the World
First Hand Experience with Some, Wish List for Others
Sanibel Island, Florida, is one such stateside location with secluded beaches. Close to Fort Meyers, this island contains fewer tourists, and you can find a beach without the crowds. Our family has visited here, and to our delight, have found Sanibel Island beaches to provide fabulous sea shell collecting.
Further south on the Florida Gulf Coast is Naples. A company called Naples Water Tours offers charter boats for groups up to 12. Our family went on one of their trips, and not only did we see dolphin pods up close, but we were treated to a private, secluded beach stop, reached via the backwaters. This beach was gorgeous, the shelling was great, and there was literally nobody within sight.
Molokai, Hawaii, can claim no traffic lights, no large buildings, and virtually empty beaches. You fly from Honolulu, and are at Molokai a mere 25 minutes later. Its beaches have been tagged pristine by many.
Costa Rica has become a playground for many tourists, and many folks of sufficient means have taken up residence. You will find secluded beaches in Costa Rica by heading to the Caribbean coast of this tropical country. To travel to Puerto Limon, the capital of Limon Province, follow Highway 32 from San Jose.
The Yucatan Peninsula is home to the Yum Balam ecological reserve, and Holbox Island is part of that reserve. The island has many secluded beaches, made of luxurious white sands. Swimming in the Gulf is great, and very few folks will interrupt your stay. From Cancun, Chiquila is about two hours by car, and the ferry at Chiquila will take you to Holbox Island.
Back in the States, the Coast of Oregon provides a touch of seclusion in the Oswald West State Park. A 15 to 20 minute walk through the park's forest is required to reach the beach. This walk keeps most people away, providing the opportunity for your visit to this secluded, crescent shaped beach on a pristine cove. Close to Portland, the Oswald West State Park is an easy drive.
Barbuda Island in the Caribbean is said to provide better beaches than Antigua, the more famous destination of the two "sister" islands. Barbuda's beaches are natural pink sand, and allegedly are basically deserted most of the time. To get to Barbuda, fly into Antigua, then connect to the small Carib-Aviation line for the 20 minute ride to Barbuda.
Club Med, known for its massive luxurious sea side resort developments, once had plans to build on Playa Medina, on the Paria Peninsula of Venezuela. Fortunately local opposition stopped this plan. Thus, the "gold sand" beaches remain untouched. A few bungalows and one restaurant are the only developments here. It will take you 10 hours to drive from Caracas, or a chartered small plane will land at Carupano, a one hour drive. If you desire seclusion, either means of transportation will be worth the time.
Bonaire, part of the Netherlands Antilles, is known for some of the best coral reef diving in the world. As a result, many of the people there spend most of the time underwater. Thus, beaches are not crowded, and offer great opportunities for finding miles of open beach on the south side of the island. Major airlines fly into the Flamingo airport.
North Carolina, another area that we have traveled, has many beach areas that you will find can be secluded. The best way to enjoy these beaches is simply to head out on the coastal areas, preferably on a weekday, and just explore. We have found many beaches that are deserted close to the Virginia North Carolina border. While not necessarily a "glamorous" area, you can find many good places to be a beach bum for a day.

Post a CommentOur family has enjoyed the beaches along the Gulf area in Florida, too. Thanks for the recommendations. We'll keep them in mind the next time we take a vacation to that area.
Sounds like great choices. Nothing worse than looking for tiny spots on crowded beaches.
