Catfish can be found both in fresh water and saltwater. They are called catfish because of the prominent barbers that look so much like a cat's whiskers, although not all members of the catfish family have this. Aside from that, they also have a distinguishable feature of having spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins. These are actually spine-like rays that are strong and hollow and all catfish have this except the electric catfish. These are what they use as a means of defense and these can cause stings that usually are venomous, however, they do not usually result in any serious injury. But there is irritation where the puncture site is and also pain too. And because they are of significant importance commercially, humans usually get a taste of this defense most of the time. If you or someone you know happens to be stung by a catfish whether as you were catching them or just by accident, read this guide to treating catfish stings.
Wash the wounded area with warm water, but be sure to keep it as hot as you are able to tolerate. The reason for using the hottest water you can stand is because it is believed to taper the venom effects as well as the burning sensation that is usually there. As a warning though, do not try to use scalding or boiling water because you want to totally be free from the venom effects because doing this will only bring about more injury. Pain relievers may be taken and antibiotics may also be taken as a prophylaxis or to prevent infection. Observe the wound carefully for the following four to five days and watch out for signs of infection that include the following: redness, increased pain, soreness above the wounded area or in joint areas. Catfish sting are usually harmless unless infection settles in.
Catfish stings resolve on their own most of the time, however they can become very painful. Should the wound become infected, a classic cellulitis could occur. If this happens, you will need to seek professional help right away. Go to a physician so he or she can advise you on what medications to take in order to treat the infection or prescribe something. Avoid getting the wound in contact with stagnant or contaminated water so as not to aggravate the condition.
