Guide to Understanding Your Computer Fan

Jasmine Starr

In this guide, I will explain what a computer fan is and what you need to know about it. If you are new to computers, the fan is probably unheard of to you. However, the fan is a very important part of the computer and if it's not working, then your whole computer will go down.

What is a Computer Fan?

A computer fan is what keeps your computer cool. It is normally located in the back of your computer's tower, in the power supply. If you look at the back of your tower, you should be able to see the fan. If your fan quits working on your PC, your PC will not boot up. It will act like there is no power going to it. If the PC is on and it all of a sudden freezes or cuts off, your fan may have quit. Sometimes when the fan quits, the computer will get so hot that the computer will cut off.

How to Clean Your Fan

From time to time, you will need to clean your computer's fan to keep it free from dust. If too much dust gets on the fan, it will stop it from turning and in turn cut your computer off. If you live in a place where your home gets dusty quick, you will need to clean the fan more often than usual. To clean your fan, you can purchase a can of "Air". This air can be purchased from any computer store or Wal-Mart. It is in a white can that is located in the Electronics section of Wal-Mart and different places in computer stores.

After you have purchased the can of air, you can go home, slide out your PC and spray the air directly into the fan. Doing this will blow the dust out of the fan and clean it. If you have a portable air tank that you use for cars or bikes, you can use it also to blow out the fan. You want to keep the fan free of dust or else your computer will quit.

Replacing the Fan

If something goes wrong and your fan quits, you will have to replace the fan. Sometimes the fans will simply quit working and not due to dust. When this happens, you will have to replace the fan. If you still have a warranty, you can send it back to the company and have it replaced for free. If you do not have a warranty on your computer, you can change it or send it to someone who works on computers to change it.
