Guide to Utah's Community Colleges

Ryan Barnes
In Utah there are a number of great community colleges. The best part is that all of these colleges are members of the UEN (Utah Education Network) which means that all of the credits that you earn can be transferred directly to theState's Universities, including: the University of Utah, Utah State, and Utah Valley University. So you can really leverage your education by attending one of these great colleges.

The biggest community college in the state is Salt Lake Community College; also know as SLCC (pronunced "Slick"). SLCC is a great choice because they offer almost all of the same courses that the Universities offer. Although they don't have much work for upper classmen, you can get all of your generals and through your sophmore year relativly quickly. SLCC has various campuses around the Salt Lake Valley. The largest of which is on Redwood Road. Since the school charges based on how many credit hours you are taking, it is hard to say how much it will cost to attend, but as a rule of thumb about $1500 will get you a full class load.SLCC probably gives you the most bang for your buck with low tuition, excellent instruction, and small class sizes. Furthermore you can find great financial aid. Many students attend SLCC on scholarships and grants.

If you've never been a fan of the big city, Utah also has a college just for you. Imagine attending a small college town. So small, that it only has one stop light. This place exists. It is called Snow College, in Ephraim, Utah. The city may be small but it has a big heart. It is a great place to study: calm, relaxing and laid back. And for students interested in Religious History, they can't miss the annual "Mormon Miracle Pageant" held at the Manti Temple. Snow College is also vety affordable, with a price tag of about $2000. But you may take as many classes as you want. They accept any kind of financial aid and have many scholarships to award as well.

CEU, or the College of Eastern Utah is located in another small city, Price, Utah. The college boosts a natural history museum, specializing in dinosaur fossils. When I was a little boy I spent hours at this museum, captivated by the impressive fossils of Tyransaurs, Giant Sloths and Wooly Mammoths. The area surrounding the college is ideal for finding fossils, and camping, and many other great outdoors activities as well. CEU is a great school with a very affordable price tag of about $1200 per semester. Again they accept any kind of financial aid and have various scholarships to award.

These community colleges are just some of my particular favorites in the state of Utah. There are many other great institutions that are also members of the UEN. All of the credits earned in these schools are completely transferable. For a more complete list of all the member schools of the UEN please visit their site.
