Varicose veins are bulging veins that usually occur in the legs. It is more common in women than in men. Varicose veins are usually hereditary, but can form from many other things such as pregnancy, obesity, standing for long periods of time, menopause, and aging. People who suffer with varicose veins usually seek health care from a special vein care doctor known as a Phlebologist. Varicose veins are much different from spider veins and blue veins. Varicose veins become enlarged and are very painful, especially when standing and walking. They also itch and when you scratch them, it can cause you to have ulcers. The symptoms of varicose veins vary, with some being more severe than others. Here are a few ways that you can tell if you may have varicose veins.

Less severe symptoms may be aching legs that feel heavy especially at night and after walking or exercise. Also you may notice spider veins appearing in the affected area of the varicose veins. You also may notice swelling and discoloration around the affected area. Waste products as well, could be building up in your legs causing them to become red, dry, and very itchy.

Another sign that you may have varicose veins is you will see them bulging from underneath your skin. They may also feel as if you have a rope under you skin. The area that is affected by the varicose veins could also feel very painful. Some symptoms may occur during menstruation or pregnancy. It is also possible that you may not have any symptoms, it may just be cosmetically noticeable.

Some areas may start to produce blood clots as well as the area could be infected. This is why it is important to see a doctor if you think you may have varicose veins. The affected area may also begin to feel inflamed. Varicose veins are usually pretty harmless, but more serious symptoms require immediate attention from a doctor. Such as if the skin around the area is very thin and a minor cut causes bleeding, then it may not be able to stop, therefore you will need to see a doctor as soon as possible to prevent you from bleeding to death.

Another serious condition that varicose veins may cause is a blood clot to present itself in your lungs or heart. You can recognize this if you feel shortness of breath and you have a hard time breathing. A blood clot to your heart can kill you almost instantly. If you feel that you may have any of these symptoms related to varicose veins, please see a doctor immediately.
