Shaman are probably the most versatile of the classes in World of Warcraft. They can be healers, they can melee, and they can do a lot of spell damage. They are as versatile as the Druid class. That is not to say that they are really similar, however. The Druid and the Shaman are as different to play as oil and water.

For one thing, the Shaman has all of their abilities immediately available at their fingertips, while the Druid has to change forms to fit the occasion. However, the Druid tends to have more abilities per role than the Shaman does. Really, although they are both versatile classes, they are very, very different to play.

A Shaman's abilities are split up into three different schools. The three schools are Elemental, Enhancement, and Restoration. Restoration is the talent tree for those who wish to better their healing abilities. Enhancement is for those who wish to improve the Shaman's latent melee abilities. Elemental is the talent tree for those who want to improve their magic damage, and their totemic abilities.

Shaman have a good amount of healing ability, and the Restoration talent tree is good for those who wish to improve it. The talents in that tree include talents that decrease the mana cost, decrease the casting time, increase the amount they heal, increase the critical heal chance, and add special effects to the heal. You can also get some talents that do things like decrease the mana cost of your totems, and other effects. You can also get some useful spells from the talent tree. These include the Mana Tide Totem, a mana replenishing totem, and the Nature's Swiftness spell, which makes the next Nature spell you cast that has a casting time of less then time seconds an instant cast.

Enhancement is very useful for people who want to improve their melee abilities and stats. This is a good tree for solo players. You can get talents that allow you to duel wield, and one that lets you use two hand weapons, and ones that give you special weapon attacks, like the Stormstrike spell. You can find talents that increase stats, and ones that make your totems more effective. You can find some neat spells there, too, like the afore mentioned Stormstrike spell, which attacks with both weapons, and causes the next two sources of Nature damage to have increased damage. There is also the Shamanistic Rage spell, which allows your melee attacks to have a chance to regenerate some of your mana for a short time.

The Elemental tree is filled with talents that will improve your totems, and talents to increase your spell damage potential. These can decrease spell cost, and cool down time, and casting time, among many other things. You can increase the damage and effects of your totems, and increase the damage of your spells. You can also net yourself some new abilities, just like the other trees. These include the Totem of Wrath spell, which increases the chance to hit and critically hit enemies for your nearby group members.

There are many choices, many abilities, and many different talents to choose from. And every build requires a vastly different play style, so make your choice wisely.
