Guiding Light: 70-Year-Old Show is Best Daytime Soap Opera

Chris Marcum
Guiding Light is the longest running soap opera on television. They are currently celebrating their 70th year on television. This is amazing that Guiding Light is 70 years old and is still one of the top contenders as the best soap opera on television. This is for good reasons.

Guiding Light has changed over the past seventy years but still remains mostly the same. They have pretty much steered clear of the supernatural that many soaps have taken on. They try to portrait real people in a real town. This makes the audience better able to connect to the story lines and characters.

One of the aspects that I really love about Guiding Light is that they have not changed the characters very much. Reva Shayne Lewis is a long-time character of the show that is still portrayed by the same actress, Kim Zimmer. Kim Zimmer's character Reva Shayne has been with Guiding Light on and off for over the past 30 years. She has died and been brought back a few times as well. Her long time love is Josh Lewis. They have also had an on and off relationship. They are currently in a down time while Josh is marring Reva's sister. Josh Lewis is also a great example of career characters on the show. Lewis who is played by Robert Newman has been on Guiding Light since 1981.

Guiding Light also is the best daytime soap opera because of their flow of the show. They stick with one story at a time. There may be small story lines going on at one time but only one main story line for a long period of time. They will have a main story line that they will let play through before going on to the next big drama. Right now the main drama is the kidnapping of police officer Marina Cooper. The seem to focus on one family at a time. The Cooper's who are just about all cops are a close net family who has been going through a difficult time not only with the disappearance of Marina but an unexpected pregnancy as well.

Guiding Light is hands down the best daytime drama on television. They not only give us an exciting show everyday Monday through Friday but they are also contributing to society through their find your light series. Here they are coming into the community and donating their time to fixing up schools and theaters as well as peoples home in the gulf region. They are the best soap opera for their performance on and off stage.

"Guiding Light" is a poorly written excuse for a daytime drama. The new filming is horrible, most of the actors are ugly and it bores me to tears. Also, the fat chick had Lap-Band surgery and she looks no better. Get her off the screen! I remember when this show was must-see in the late 80's. Bring back the days of Roger, Holly, Blake, Phillip, Beth and Mindy.
