Guild Wars Eye of the North is not a full campaign like Nightfall or Factions and players must already own a game before they can have Eye of the North.

Unlike other games there are no additional professions in the Eye of the North but there are eighteen new, multi-level dungeons. There are a hundred and fifty new skills in Eye of the North and fifty of those are only available in the player versus environment mode. This Guild Wars campaign has forty new suits of armor and ten new heroes as well as other new items, weapons and titles, which appear in all new Guild Wars campaigns.

The Eye of the North was designed as a bridge between the first series of Guild Wars and the second series and introduces the new race of the Norn who dwell on the ice covered slopes of the Shiverpeak Mountains, which are situated in the North of the continent. There are also the Asura who inhabit the southern part of the Maguuma jungle and the Sylvari. The main storyline in the Eye of the North is a continuation of the story in the Prophecies campaign.

Most of the action in the Eye of the North campaign takes place in the newly created multi-level dungeons. In order to reach the different levels of a dungeon the players have to defeat bosses and buy keys and interact with non-playing characters. When a dungeon boss is defeated a treasure chest appears and its contents are shared between the team. Unlike other areas the dungeons make no contribution to the cartographer titles that are bestowed on players who have explored all of the map. Most of the dungeons have their own area map that can be found somewhere near the entrance of the dungeon.

The Eye of the North leans heavily towards accomplishments gained in the player versus environment play such as titles. Like other campaigns the Eye of the North introduces three new mini games, Dwarven Boxing, Norn Fighting Tournament and Polymock. The first of these games involves one on one combat and the player acquires a number of boxing skills, each successful match that is played is rewarded with Dwarven reputation points.

In the Norn Fighting Tournament the player is involved in six matches can win Norn reputation points or championship tokens that can be exchanged for a crown. In the final game the player has to beat the huff and the Polymock master in order to gain Asura title track points. Rather than standing alone the Eye of the North is meant to complete the story begun in Prophecies.
