Guillermo Del Toro's Upcoming Movie Projects

Jennifer Amlie
Guillermo del Toro is a master at weaving scary and suspenseful movies. He's won praise for his films including the Devil's Backbone, Hellboy, and Pan's Labyrinth. Since del Toro is no longer involved with the Hobbit, what new movies is he working on? He seems to be keeping himself busy with these upcoming projects.

Don't be Afraid of the Dark
Guillermo del Toro is the one of the writers and producer of the 1973 ABC television horror remake. The story is very similar to the original except the main character of Sally is a young girl instead of a woman. Sally moves in with her father and new girlfriend while they renovate an old house. She finds a hidden basement with ancient creatures residing there. The movie is rated R and will be released in January 2011. A teaser trailer is here.

At the Mountain of Madness
Based on the 1936 H.P. Lovecraft novella, del Toro has been interested in making a movie version for years. The story takes place in Antarctica where a scientific expedition uncovers a monstrous species called the Elder Things. At this year's San Diego Comic Con, it was announced he will be starting the new horror project next May with James Cameron as producer. The movie will be shot in 3D. A tentative release date is 2013.

Haunted Mansion
Also at Comic Com, it was announced del Toro will be writing and producing a new version of Disney's Haunted Mansion. The new movie will not be a comedy like the first Haunted Mansion. Instead, it will be scary and focus on the HatBox Ghost. An image of the ghost can be seen here. While the original Haunted Mansion was seen as a disappointment by most, with del Toro taking the lead on the new one, it's sure to be a creepy and unique movie. A tentative release date is scheduled for 2012.

Frankenstein
Doug Jones, who plays Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth is confirmed to portray the creature in del Toro's Frankenstein. This version is suppose to follow Mary Shelley's classic more closely then any other movie. While there isn't much else known, a make-up test with Jones will be filmed in the next few weeks. In an MTV interview, del Toro said he wanted to capture a black and white illustration quality in the movie.

Other del Toro projects being talked about are Jekyll and Hyde, Pinocchio, and Hellboy 3. Most of these movies are years away from being in movie theaters. Still, fans of del Toro's captivating, unique brand of story telling will be following the progress of the movies closely.

I have been waiting for his version of At the Mountains of Madness since I first heard about he project three years ago. It is one of HPL's best works. Many of del Toro's other works have had slight nods to Lovecraft. Let him take the wheel and drive it.
