As a young lad, I made sure all of my family knew of my affinity for these cheesy golden lumps of goodness. So much so, I remember receiving the canister-like packages gift wrapped at Christmas. It was a golden treasure the likes of which the Mayan depositories couldn't distract a young boy of 10 or 11. I remember day dreaming of the time I would grow up and have a cabinet full of the darkish blue cans of goodness. Mr. Peanut would be methodically turned to face out and they would be stacked on top of each other so that only the deep yellow plastic top would distinguish where one ended and the other began.
I miss them so.
I have moved on since my correspondence with the Planters company. Ms Peanut, I will call her, wrote me a letter in response to my ramblings as to why they could allow such a thing to take place. I expressed they were needed in a world of bland corn, bland cheese, and traditional plastic packaging. Their competitor, dare I say, Chester Cheetah, was hard on their heals to copy the genuinely buttery flavor (which you get a real good sense of if you binge two or three at a time). Ms Peanut wrote, and I'm paraphrasing here, that the market share was too small to continue production on the delightful morsels. 'Sniff". Travesty. Well that was that.
My taste for these wonderful snacks was full on but yet was only a small portion of the market that could support the continued production of them. Sad. There are things in society that are just creature comforts that make the days go by a little better like your favorite cologne or perfume, your favorite shoes, a cool breakfast spot on your way to work, the taste of your favorite chocolate, a coffee, the candy machine at work, a cigarette, or a various number of things that all allow us to get through the day. May they all stay within your grasp and easy to obtain.
I have attempted to find solace in the competitors but, to no avail, nothing sends me back to my childhood like those little crunchy wonders. I have gotten into cheese straws now but that is another story. I last experienced my final canister of Planter Cheese Curls actually off the coast of Florida while on a cruise. No cruise I have been on since has been quite as good. Hmmm, I wonder why.

Post a CommentMiss them desperately!!
I am from Guatemala, and we also miss the cheese curls and the cheese balls. All America miss these snaks...Please Planters bring them back! Bring them back ! bring them back!
I live in Guatemala, and I still dream of Planters Cheez Curls. I was so crushed when they discontinued them. I still have hope, one day, an executive who loved licking his orange fingers, will relaunch them and make everyone happy!
I miss Planters cheese balls and cheees curls. I agree with the article. No one has come close to Planters cheese curls.
Ok. Just became the 13,393rd signature on a petition to bring the Cheeze Balls or Curls back. I so miss these snacks. http://www.petitiononline.com/cheez123/petition.html
My daughter and I LOVE planters cheese curls, or rather loved them. Please Planters, bring them back.
As a child of the 80's and early 90's, I loved getting my hands on the big blue canisters and popping the crunchy cheesy bites. I'm sad to say no one I know remembers them but I still do. I wish they'd bring them back. Cheetohs is good, but it's nothing compared to Planters version. I loved the planters crunch more too.
omg!! im so sad. im my opinion cheetos do not come close!! i think they should give them another try and work on advertising. never have to worry about crushed snacks when youve got that craving for that oh so wonderful cheesy, crunchy, treat in a can.
Say it isn't so. I had been putting off searching the internet for infomration for so long on where to find those awesome cheese curls. I hadn't seen them in the stores for awhile, but sometimes my local stores don't carry everything. In my heart I feared this was the reality. I just didn't want to know. A childhood friend is gone.
Aww. This post made me tear up a bit. I too remember the golden days of my childhood when my Dad would keep a canister of Planter's cheese curls in the car for long rides. There was nothing so kid-friendly then ending up with all that powdery orange goodness on my finger tips and licking it off when we reached our destination...So sad they are not made any longer.
