The guinea pig, also known as a cavy, is not related to pigs nor is it from New Guinea. This animal is actually a type of rodent from South America. The Guinea pig is relatively large compared to most pet rodents. They have a variety of coat patterns and colors and can be either long haired, short haired, or something in between. The first thing to consider when choosing a guinea pig for a pet is its housing.
The size of the cage for your guinea pig is important. A guinea pig should have a cage that is at least seven and a half square feet, of course if you have multiple guinea pigs the cage's size should reflect that. This will allow enough room for the animal to have a nesting area, a toilet area, and plenty of space to eat, play, and exercise. The next thing to look into is what type of bedding you use. Although pine and cedar beddings are somewhat popular, these beddings are not recommended. Many of the cedar and pine beddings contain chemicals that can cause health problems in your pet. There are other kinds of bedding that are much safer, such as those made out of paper or hardwood. You will also need to make sure that your guinea pig is not exposed to very high or low temperatures. The next thing to consider will be what you put into the cage.
Guinea pigs have teeth that are always growing. Because of this, it is important to provide them with plenty of items to chew. They will also require places to hide, so that they feel safe. You will also want to provide them with plenty to do while in their cage, although you need to make sure that they have plenty of play time with you outside their cage.
Guinea pigs are social animals and will require handling from you to keep from being bored or lonely. If you have the resources, you may want to consider getting a second guinea pig to keep your pet company especially if you have less time to spend with it. These animals can be quite affectionate towards their owners.
The guinea pig is a friendly animal and can make a fun and affectionate pet. They require proper housing and care but are overall relatively easy to care for. If you have the time to socialize with your pet, a guinea pig may be right for you.
