The Guinness Book of World Records made a stop at the San Diego comic book, science-fiction, and newly added pop culture barometer convention to present attendees with awards for various achievements of the entertainment world that related to the attendees and industry present. Using the convention to promote its Guinness Book of World Records 2011 release on September 15th did not also did not hurt. Industry representatives including Sylvester Stallone were on hand to accept the awards, which will no doubt boost marketing blurbs for those projects.
Saw, the movie franchise involving the sadistic Jigsaw Killer and his bevy of psychological gory traps, received the Most Successful Horror Movie Series with $732 million global box office sales. Saw promoted itself regularly at the Comic-Con exhibition hall and will add even more to its record when Saw VII comes out later this year. Another proud recipient of a movie franchise was the aforementioned Sylvester Stallone, who was on hand to accept the Most Successful Sports Movie Franchise award for the Rocky films. He accepted the award with co-star of Rocky IV Dolph Lundgren and both will be seen together in the upcoming The Expendables.Rocky films ran between 1976 to 2006 and is pretty much the only sports film franchise besides Major League and The Mighty Ducks.
Television received its fair share of Guinness World Record entries. Given the sci-fi nature of Comic-Con, naturally Guinness would have to announce the Highest Rated Animated Sci-Fi Television Series and that was Cartoon Network's Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Averaging 4 million viewers at its launch, the numbers go to show that A) Science-fiction is a growing trend in pop culture and B) Fans will watch anything with Star Wars when it launches. The current Highest Rated Animated Series-sci-fi or otherwise-is still a sci-fi series albeit a comedy. Creator Matt Groening was present to accept the award for Futurama.
A couple of professional fighting personalities were on hand to accept their entries into the Guinness Book of World Records. With seven wins from 1997 to 2008, Randy Couture accepted his award for Most Ultimate Fighting Championships Heavyweight Championship Bouts Won. While the validity of professional wrestling is still a subject to debate, the recorded number of championships wins is setin stone. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin received his Guinness World Record for Most Wins of the World Wrestling Entertainment Royal Rumble for his three wins in 1997, 1998, and 2001.
A couple of unique entries filled up the Guinness World Record presentation. Pat Bernaletti and Californian competitive eater Joey Chestnut both got a Guinness World Record for Most Chocolate Bars Eaten in One Minute, which was three Milky Ways. As for what that caloric promotional stunt had to do with Red Faction: Armageddon is still anybody's guess. Not quite as tasty but still sometimes eaten by kids who do not know better, LEGO received a Guinness World record for Tallest Structure Built With Interlocking Bricksbyerecting a 99ft 1in high LEGO structure during an event in Norway. This proves how definitive LEGO is in terms of interlocking brick toys.
Lastly The Guinness Book of World records decided to honor the comic books craft that made Comic-Con possible by highlighting any record breaking achievements. Todd Klein scored a Guinness World Record for Most Eisner Awards in One Category for his 15 wins in Lettering from 1993 to 2008. And the final comic book related Guinness World Record was for Largest Comic Book Convention with over 125,000 attendees went to-of all comic book conventions-Comic Con International. How very appropriate.
