Guitar Praise

Jeff Rogers
I know a lot of people who just love Guitar Hero and with bands like Aerosmith and Metallica leading the charge, there are also rumors of Van Halen and The Beatles joining the Activision family, the chance to be a rock star in your own living room becomes more attractive each day.

I love music, I grew up on it and I've pretty much always got a song in my head. I've played Guitar Hero but I didn't like it because I play guitar and well, if you play guitar then you know that making music isn't just about pushing the right colored buttons. No offense to those who play Guitar Hero, I think it's a fun and entertaining thing to do.

Since I'm selective about the music I let my kids listen to, I still have that responsibility, my wife and I found Guitar Praise to be just as entertaining and the music is something the kids can enjoy too. Christian music has grown in the last few years to accommodate all media outlets, CDs, concerts, and digital television. My kids listen to Christian music more than any other type and since I need a little harder edge to my music I've found some bands that will rock the house.

Guitar Praise is manufactured by Digital Praise, Inc. They are located in Fremont, CA. Guitar Praise is similar to Guitar Hero because you get the onscreen lyrics, you can unlock new songs in sets of five, you can tilt the guitar controller to activate spinner bonuses and you can earn new guitars with different sounds and effects. This system cost $99.95 and comes with everything you need to get started.

My reason for choosing Guitar Praise is because of the music, the lyrics are much better than Guitar Hero offers and I don't have to worry about my kids singing something that would make other people question my parenting. Guitar Praise has bands like Pillar, Skillet, Kutless and tobyMac to name a few. Check out some of those bands and you will hear excellent music with uplifting lyrics.

Although the box for Guitar Praise shows people with real instruments, the game controller looks just like the Guitar Hero one does, simple black and white, it seems to be mirrored after a Fender Stratocaster. Five buttons, each a different color and a whammy bar for added effect. The game downloads on your computer via a CD-ROM, its compatible with a Mac or a PC.

If you want to play against somebody you have that option as well. The wireless guitar controller allows you to play guitar or bass, one person can lead or you can guitar duel. You can post your high scores on line, my son loves to play it and when he first got it he played for a few hours trying to unlock as many songs as possible. I don't have to worry about the lyrics he is listening to and with over 50 bands listed we research a lot of new music.

I know a lot of parents are looking for positive alternatives to what the general public is pressured into buying for their kids; this is a great substitute to what is available. The music rocks, the lyrics are uplifting and you don't have to buy a separate gaming system to play it on since it works on your computer. I would recommend Guitar Praise because it gives kids the same chance to play similar type guitar games but the music is better for little ears that are always listening, and then repeating.

As an atheist who is aware of the dangers of a religious upbringing, I would say that choosing this knockoff draws parenting into question far more than Guitar Hero would...

Now THAT'S a cool idea! The Christian alternative to Guitar Hero. I like it.

Bravo for your parenting! We Christians have to keep up with current trends in music and technology if we are not going to lose the youth. Like Paul write in his letter to the Corinthians, Christians "come behind in no gift." That includes contemporary music.
