Gulf Power Meets to Increase Rates on Thursday 09/15/2011

Meet and State Your Opposition to a Rate Increase that Will Cost You $93.5 Million

Malina Debrie

I enjoy being able to turn on my television and watch TV when I want to. I enjoy being able to cook and turn the lights on or the ceiling fans or anything that runs by power when I need it. I also enjoy being cool in the summer and warm in the winter. However, does it cost the company I am purchasing this power from an additional $93.5 million dollars to provide these luxuries?

If the cost of providing power can be justified with the gradual increases they have placed on my bill over the last ten years, I then will have to tighten my pocket strings, further control and adjust my budget and pay the bills as they are received. However, if the cost is merely to line the pocket of the CEO's or those in positions of authority, provide luxuries that some can do without or keep the investors happy with maximum returns on their dollars, then I think I need to make my voice heard and oppose the new increase request and ask that the PSC make Gulf Power see where they can cut some cost and tighten their budget.

During these hard times, we as consumers cannot just ask for an increase in our salaries and get it. So, why are all utility companies asking for increases and those increases being approved? If there is more demand, then yes, we should pay for our individual higher kilowatt usage. However, the burden of more need should not be placed on consumers as it has been allowed to so easily be done. We all must tighten our purse strings and modify our budgets to help out during these hard times. It's hard on everyone. However, so far, the consumers are the only ones suffering.

If you're pleased with the increase and have no problem with it going into effect during the height of the holiday season, then stay at home. However, if you need a little more tightening of the purse strings from Gulf Power and all utility companies, then be at the meeting on Thursday, September 15, 2011.

The rate meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in room 160 at the J.E. Hall Educational Services Center, 30 E Texar Drive, Pensacola, FL.
