Gum Wrapper Dress-Teen Designs Her Own Prom Gown

Elizabeth Rasmuson Makes Gum Wrapper Dress with Matching Vest for Her Prom Escort

Ah, the signs of spring. Birds singing, flowers blooming, making a gum wrapper dress for prom. What?! Yes, one creative 11th grader in Garner, Iowa, Elizabeth Rasmuson handmade her prom dress and escort's vest out of gum wrappers (see Tampa Bay website).

Obviously, the prom dress decisions young ladies make today are quite a bit different from the prom dress decisions of years ago. Wonder if Rasmuson thought, "Hmm, let me see, what flavor do I want to chew for a year? Apple? Cinnamon? Peppermint?"

Calvin Klein and Liz Claiborne, look out! Elizabeth Rasmuson has a fashion design idea. Her creativity has given prom dresses a whole new chew, er look. According to Personal Money Store website, making wearable items out of gum wrappers, like a gum wrapper dress, is called "Tramp art" or "prison art."

Elizabeth Rasmuson says she was inspired to wear a prom dress of her own design when she heard about someone making a prom dress out of duct tape. So, she suggested her boyfriend and future prom escort, Jordan Weaver help her collect gum wrappers to use to make the gum wrapper prom dress. Rasmuson's choice of gum, or should one say, wrapper, was Wrigley's 5 Gum.

What influenced Rasmuson's decision? Was it the color of the wrappers or the taste of the gum? According to the Snarkfood website and YouTube video, Rasmuson claims she's "always liked the colors" of the Wrigley 5 Gum wrappers and decided to use them to construct her gum wrapper dress. And so it began, Rasmuson and Jordan buying and saving Wrigley 5 Gum wrappers.

Huffington Post website displays a YouTube video of Rasmuson, her mother-Dawn Rasmuson, and boyfriend-Jordan Weaver discussing the gum wrapper dress. In the video, Rasmuson says she "stopped counting" the gum wrappers after collecting 200 of them for her gum wrapper dress. Mother, Dawn states she is proud of her teen daughter's individuality. Rasmuson's boyfriend, Weaver describes (in the YouTube video) how Rasmuson bought "a ton of gum" and distributed it to her friends, taking back wrappers to make the gum wrapper dress after the gum was opened/chewed.

The finished gum wrapper dress was coated with vinyl to make sure it would hold together. Rasmuson had enough wrappers left to make her date, Weaver, a gum wrapper vest to match her gum wrapper dress. To see a picture of Rasmuson and Weaver decked out in all their gum wrapper glory, see this link.

It's certainly creative, maybe Wrigley will give her a scholarship in exchange for all the free advertising.

From the look of the photo, it is not quite out of gum wrappers, but I guess it's a gimmick.
