Gun Control Laws Are Good

We Need Stricter Gun Control Laws

The Polymath
On April 16, 2007, a mentally-disturbed student gunman intruded into Norris Hall in Virginia Tech and chained the building's entry doors. As the police reached the second floor, the gunman fatally shot himself in the temple before he killed a total of 32 people. After the shocking Virginia Tech massacre, we, as the students should support the adoption of stricter gun control laws to reduce crime and provide a safer living environment. Think about it, even a mentally disturbed student is able to purchase powerful weapons easily; do you think our gun control laws are strict enough?

The high rate of gun-related murders is a proof for the deficiency of our gun control laws. First of all, many school massacres would have been prevented if we have stricter gun control laws. As the rate of teenage crimes related to guns increases, what can we do? Sit there and watch? We should urge the government to adopt stricter gun control laws to prevent more massacres from occurring. In addition, more guns simply lead to more violence. The high gun-related murder rates in our country are strongly influenced by the high rate of gun ownership. The worse thing is, some of these gun owners are completely unfit to own firearms, such as the gunman in Virginia Tech who is diagnosed with depression and autism. Their emotion is like a destructive time bomb and we have absolutely no idea when it's going to explode. Also, guns are too easy to obtain for teens. Many teens are able to get guns either from their parents or from other illegal sources. Gun report reveals a shocking statistic that 2827 child and teen deaths by firearms in one year exceed U.S. combat deaths during three years in Iraq. Think about it, just as the terrorists take the lives of our soldiers, more children lose the battles to the monster of gun violence.

We deserve to live in a safer society. The population of gun ownership increases every single year. Gun ownerships are much like those infectious viruses. You will not feel their harms until they are fully spread in our once-peaceful society. To immunize our society against gun violence, we must have stricter gun control laws. In addition, every gun owner is a potential threat to every other member in our society. Maybe you would think everyone should have guns to protect themselves. However, more guns are just adding more fuel to the fire of chaos. Is every gun owner going to use their guns solely for self-defense? Is everyone able to keep their self-control and not using their guns when they get into a conflict? Imagine what the society would be if everyone owns a gun. Some emotionally unstable people might start a rampage any moment. Also, if you think you should be able to own guns easily because that's your rights, shame on you! Think about other people that live in this society. We deserve to live in a safer environment without any lethal weapons.

Gun control is the most effective way to reduce crime if we done it correctly. Our federal gun control laws are so ineffective because there are too many loopholes. A criminal might not be able to obtain guns in one state. But in another state that is very lenient on gun ownership, he can get guns even without criminal background checks. We need to support stricter federal gun control laws because guns are just totally out of control. For those who are unfit to carry guns, we should disarm them, and work together to provide a safer society for ourselves. If we have stricter gun control laws, we would be able to live in a safe and harmonious society and we definitely have the rights to do so!

"[E]very gun owner is a potential threat to every other member in our society." Does that include all the various government entities that have loads of the nastiest weapons around?

I would add to the amalgam, but seems most of the commentators have summed it up quite well. I will however add this: it's easy to whine, ain't it? More gun laws? There are, in total including federal and state, more gun laws than all other laws - perhaps more than all other laws combined. The author expresses the typical emoting lament of little knowledge but a powerful feeling that someone, somewhere must fix this. I have more guns and ammo than the typical small town sheriff's dept. and unless one kicks in my door chances are they will never know it. And I concealed carry for a coupe of decades and still, I have never pulled my weapon or threatened to, so stop blaming society and law abiding citizens for the acts of the lawless.

Gun laws are rampant in both states and federal levels and there are enough of them. More people are killed by cars, sharpened phillips head screwdrivers and knives than by guns alone. Posters who want more gun control are uninformed, do not know the current laws and look at one incident and apply it to others. Get educated before posting anti - gunner, please!

So anyone with depression or autism is a ticking time bomb? Think of how many people they could run down with a car. We should restrict all depressed people from driving. They could also try and hijack a plane since they are just waiting to explode, so lets ban everyone with autism and depression from flying, too. There are not enough laws in the world to protect us all from crazy people, and there never will be a 100% safe or effective way.

If we somehow managed to control guns such that people couldn't get them easily, we would see more bombings, as we see elsewhere in the world. Personally, I'd rather face a gun than be blown up by a bomb.

Victim disarmament only creates easy victims. Major Nidal in Fort Worth showed us precisely how effective airport weapon rules are at creating unarmed people to shoot with impunity. It was an army airport, but armed help had to come from outside.

yes control works very well. we live in a very safe society and we don't need to protect ourselves at home. too many innocent people die from negligent gun owners. this is crap. my uncle was stabbed to death and my aunt raped while their children hid during a home burglary. until there are no more bad guys, i'll keep my children well trained and educated. if we enforce current laws, then it would have prevented most mass killings. think about illegal drugs, why are they still in the hands of children if it's banned? banning guns will not be any different. bad parenting causes children to be killers.

Do you honestly think that stricter laws will keep guns out of the hands of criminals? Remember prohibition? Yea, that worked well.

By the way, FBI criminal background checks are required in all states.
