Gun Control: My Opinion

Jennifer Wright
Let me just say, before I really get into this article, that I am neither for or against gun control and I actually dislike guns. But, I do have an opinion on them. I also want to mention that I hate politics and hardly know anything about them.

That being said, I am going to have my say about people owning guns and gun control.

Since the shooting in Arizona, I have heard a lot of talk about gun control and also have heard on the news the sales of guns and ammunition has skyrocketed.

My take on this whole situation is very simple. I don't believe gun control will ever be achieved. If we take peoples guns away they will only get them illegally. Even if gun control is legally achieved, it will never be completely controlled, it will only make good people into criminals because they won't give up their guns.

You see, where we live, having a gun could mean food for your family for the entire winter. It could mean that bear in your front yard will not attack your little girl. Our lifestyle out here is simple, but almost every single house hold owns a gun, it's a way of life.

I'm not saying that people in the boonies have more need to have guns, just that it's different. People here are scared that the government may take away their guns or limit ammunition. They are scared because if this happens they will have to find another way to get food for the year to come. With unemployment as high as it is right now, hunting is a main food source for many in this area.

The big city areas are ridden with crime, people only own guns to protect themselves from criminals. But, if gun control is achieved, then the people protecting themselves from the truly bad people will be the criminals.

I really don't know what gun control would fix anyway. If a crazy person wants to go kill someone, then he will find a way. It could have just as easily been some kind of homemade bomb instead of a gun.

Again, I am going to state that I dislike guns.

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Isn't that the saying? I believe this is true...most of the time. There is, however always an exception to the rule.

I too live in a remote area. Guns are a necessary means of life for some of us. Coyotes howl just past my yard and I feel safer knowing he isn't getting me or my dogs!

I completely agree with you. I have hunted for my food and that would be slightly more difficult without a gun. There is always the alternative that some may argue about using a bow and arrows. I believe that would be inhumane because there is a higher chance that you wnt kill the animal right away and it will suffer. Also if someone threatened me with a gun I would want to have one as well, to protect myself.
