Gun Safety - How to Properly Handle a Firearm
Safe Firearm Handling, Proper Firearm Inspection, Firearm Storage and Firearm Cleaning
One of the most important things to remember when it comes to how to properly handle a firearm correctly is this; always treat a firearm as if it were fully loaded. It doesn't matter whether the firearm is in a gun case, your vehicle, or one that you may have just found on the ground, always treat it as if it is fully loaded. Never point the firearm at anyone. Never point the firearm at anything that you don't want to be damaged. Always keep the firearm pointed towards the ground and be aware at all times of your surroundings. Never keep your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot. Rest your finger on the side of the gun until you have made the decision to shoot the firearm. Always think safety!
Make sure that you perform a proper firearm inspection before using it or putting it into storage. Remember to assume that the firearm is loaded at all times. Firearms need regular maintenance and firearm cleaning. Make sure your firearm is cleaned and well-maintained and is in good condition before using. If you're looking at firearms to buy, first perform a proper firearm inspection to make sure it's not loaded before pointing or aiming. If you see a gun lying on the side of the road or in the field etc. do not pick it up or touch it anyway. This type of situation may involve a crime and its best left to law enforcement to handle it. Another important safety issue is proper firearm storage.
If you own a firearm then you need to have proper firearm storage. If you have children, you certainly don't want them getting their hands on your firearms and possibly severely hurting themselves or someone else. This is all the more reason to have proper firearm storage for all of your firearms when not in use. There are many different types of locking mechanisms for your firearms and also numerous firearm storage cabinets or safes that offer excellent security. Always make sure your firearms are unloaded before returning them to firearm storage. It is also smart to do a good firearm inspection and firearm cleaning before returning them to storage.
Firearm cleaning is an essential task before and after using it. Many people will not clean their firearm and before returning to storage and this can cause the firearm not operate properly. Oils and dust accumulate within the firearm and can solidify causing problems. Proper firearm cleaning and maintenance will also extend its overall life.
So in order to become a responsible firearm owner you must know your equipment and know how to use it safely. Many organizations offer hunter safety courses which teach individuals the proper use of firearms. This training will include learning the typical parts of the firearm, the different types of ammunition used in firearms and the numerous safety issues that go along with owning and operating a firearm.
