Gunnar Optiks Eyewear - Product Review

Julie Wenzel
The purpose of the Gunnar Optiks is to reduce eye strain for digital users. There is a small magnification to slightly enlarge font size on the computer. The glare of the screen is reduced. When relieving eye strain, migraines can be prevented.

The Story : (Why I Bought Them)
For as long as I could remember I experienced eye strain, migraines, and even would get blood shot eyes when using the computer for long periods of time. Sometimes I would pass off my migraines thinking I was just dehydrated or didn't have enough caffeine. Of course, this could have been true sometimes but I started to notice a pattern.

I was getting migraines that no sleep, water, pain reliever, or caffeinated drink could fix. Then I noticed it happened on the days I would spend extensive hours writing, editing, or playing a game on the computer.

As a rule of thumb, when using the computer for hours it is suggested to give your eyes a rest.

After a while, the eye strain and migraines was getting in the way of my productivity on my projects. I finally took the plunge and acquired a pair of Gunnar Optiks. It took me a while to come to this decision because they don't come cheap. The cheapest pair is about $59 and runs all the way to $198. So there was a risk that these wouldn't work, and I would have blown a nice chunk of change.

First Impressions :
Upon receiving my Gunnar Optiks I noticed the nice box and case they came in. The lenses have a slight yellow tint. Some may feel strange about wearing these in the work place, but I actually find these quite stylish. There are many different styles to choose from that can appeal to all different people. I chose the Phenom style, but I also thought about getting the Anime style.

The real test, though, was how they felt and worked.

When putting on for the first time I did notice the yellow tint in the glasses slightly changed the color of my screen. However, this wasn't drastic to the point of it being distracting. The screen actually looked very clean and crisp.

The second thing I noticed was how light they felt. I hardly noticed I was wearing them. If you check out the official Gunnar Optik website, it actually has all the dimensions of every pair so you can get the best fit.

Long Term Effects :
After a few hours of wearing them, my eyes felt a little different. I did not get headaches though, and the feeling my eyes felt was different than eye strain. The moment I took them off my eyes felt back to normal. I did read before buying them that they may take getting use to. I believe this all varies by user.

For me it took about eight hours. Now I basically put them on and do not feel that funny eye adjustment anymore. Instead, I feel just like how I was hoping. I put the glasses on, and feel relief. I have no more migraines! This is the best part of it all.

There were times where I was writing for a good 6-8 hours straight and I would get such a bad migraine I would have to stop looking at the computer for two days just to feel normal again. Now I can write with ease.

It's even gotten to the point where I do not want to leave home without them. If I am some place else writing, I begin to crave my Gunnars. I can feel the eye strain coming and the possible migraine.

When my eyes began to beg for my Gunnars, I knew they were working. I recommend Gunnar Optiks to anyone who uses the computer for long periods of time.

The retail ones in the stores or online are meant for people with about 20/20 vision I believe. But you can get prescription eye wear so the Gunnars can be for anyone who needs to wear other kinds of glasses.
