Guns, Knives and Lollipops Are Illegal in School

Have We Lost Our Freedoms Completely

Sondra C
It happened in a small remote town of Orchard, Texas. The children were eating lunch when a child decided to have a small Jolly Rancher sucking candy after she finished eating. Lollipops are popular with all children.

I myself enjoy a sucking candy after I eat onions, or something that leaves a taste in my mouth. Sucking candy is sold at the checkout counters in most every Supermarket in the country.

Along with the Jolly Ranchers, we have lollipops, that the little ones have been sucking on as soon as they are able to hold the stick on the lollipop.

Hard candies and lollipops are available in every size, shape and color and I think it would be a sad day in the life of every child or adult to know that an innocent child, who was in the lunchroom with her friends, enjoying a lunch and happened to take out a jolly rancher. It was not a lollipop. She was taken into the Principal's office and given a week's detention because she broke a state rule that 'forbid any junk food from being taken into the school' . I can see not allowing guns and knives but not lollipops. These are not illegal anyplace.

Well now we have the following items no longer allowed in our schools...by law!!.

a pocket knife
a nail file
a gun
bullets
and a Jolly Rancher Sucking Candy

The child was in tears and felt humiliated as the candy was confiscated in front of all her friends in the lunchroom. She also was separated from all of the other students during her lunch time and recess for the remainder of the week when the detention begins..

The reasoning, as was reported in the newspaper interview, was that the superintendent for the school was following a 'state guideline that did not allow, junk food in the schools. Schools that did not follow the food bans would not be receiving federal funds. I can see guns and knives being illegal, but not hard candies.

Each state is supposed by ruled by their own rules and bylaws. Should be allow the Government to take over our state and local laws. Where are our freedoms - are they slowly being removed from every aspect of our lives.

Being banned from school for a week is not only humiliating for a child of ten years of age. But being banned because some higher up authority has decided that junk food, in the form of a sucking candy, should not be brought into a school is ludicrous

I think we are taking this a little bit too far. To segregate a child from her friends during her lunch hour and then to keep a child out of school for a week for a State law is just too much. Next it will be chewing gum and lollipops and candy. Someone should tell them that it is illegal to bring guns and knives to school.

Do you agree?

The government, at every level is taking over the job of parenting. Are the parents merely a tool to increase the population. Parents should guide and not the state laws banning a piece of candy from being brought into the school.

Zero tolerance is an ignorant cover all policy. This is what our entire nation is headed for if the current path is not altered. By default, everything must be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. Good write Sondra.

I"ve seen kids get suspended for having a water gun but have nothing hardly happen to them for punching a kid. Strange times we live in.

Lollipops. Really, what a desperate act of random sweetness. It is quite amazing to me. Good reporting Sondra.
