Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion I and II Review

Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion I and II colored the 90's music scene with bright, bold, unforgettable lyrics and music. These albums marked a turning point in Guns N' Roses sound and were the first to feature members of the band performing outside of their usual roles. Rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin sings lead vocals on some of the Use Your Illusion I tracks; "Dust N' Bones," "You Ain't The First" and "Double Talkin' Jive." On Use Your Illusion II, Stradlin sings "14 Years" and "So Fine" is sung by bassist Duff McKagan. Axl Rose, the lead singer, plays piano on several tracks and the band's stage shows and music videos take on a decidedly theatrical slant. The lyrics on these two CDs are excellent for getting through difficult situations. Consider this example:

I bought me an illusion
And I put it on the wall
I let it fill my head with dreams
And I had to have them all
But oh the taste is never so sweet
As what you'd believe it is-
Well I guess it never is

Slash and Axl found the perfect way to look at any new (or old) relationship with these lyrics from "Locomotive." All relationships begin as two people's illusions of each other and these lyrics are a great way to keep it in perspective. They can also be screamed out of your car window while driving down a deserted street after realizing that the taste never IS quite as sweet.

The lyrics for "Get in the Ring" are also excellent for blowing off steam in almost any situation. It can be quite therapeutic to imagine your boss, your ex, your annoying neighbor in that ring with you. Granted the song is sophomoric at best but hey they can't all be number one hits.
