Gun-Toting Teen Arrested in Birmingham

Downtown Birmingham is generally considered one of the safer downtown areas in Metro Detroit. Birmingham police rarely make arrests for gun possession. A call was recently put into the Birmingham Police Department with a tip that a young man and woman were fighting outside of the Java Hutt coffee shop on S. Old Woodward, just south of the heart of downtown Birmingham. The caller believed the young man had a gun.

When police arrived, the couple had already left the scene. However, shortly thereafter a person matching the description of the suspect was spotted at the Palladium movie theatre. When police arrived, they found the suspect just inside the doors of the theatre. Upon being approached by police and told to put his hands up, the suspect pushed the officer and attempted to flee. His shirt ripped and the gun flew across the sidewalk. Luckily, a military police officer who was on leave at the time was nearby and helped secure the suspect until backup arrived.

After being tased, the suspect was taken into custody. The 17-year old, from Southfield, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and resisting an officer. His parents posted bond.
