The ideas I will discuss here will be helpful to you in decorating your dorm come fall or quarter semester. This way, you don't have to feel that you have been thrown to the wolves when your parents drop you off in this strange new atmosphere.
My first idea is to make your dorm room look similar to the room you left at home. College is a milestone in each person's life. Now that you are becoming your own person, learning to make your own statements, this is the time to show your true personality through decorating your dorm room.
For instance, at home, mom probably had a say in what you had in your room. You probably liked some of the ideas but detested others. Use the ideas of mom's decors and add your own original tastes.
Specific decors such as colorful posters are always safe. Most colleges and universities prohibit painting rooms mostly because they have to abide by safety codes and choice of paints so painting may be out of the equation. But posters are not. Posters are always in style so get several of your favorites to adorn the plain walls of a dorm room. Movie posters, sports figures, and inspirational figures are great choices to have. Choose the ones that say a lot about you. You can find any of these from online shops such as www.posters.com
Another idea is to make a collage of your favorite people, things, and places. This can include your family members, favorite sport figures, favorite musician or band, political figures, movie stars, places you have visited or wish to visit, and the list goes on. Make it colorful and large enough that it will take up ample space from the monotonous walls. This is a cheap and cost effective way to style your room without breaking a bank.
As for furniture, dorm rooms are usually not that big so don't even think about big furnishings. Try practical and inexpensive furniture such as Futon Bed and bean bag chairs. Futon beds come in various solid as well as stripe colors. They are great space saver because during the day it is your couch, and at night is your bed. Bean bag and Foof chairs are also colorful and can be moved easily from one side of the room to the next, adding a touch of comfort as well.
If you don't want to do Futon Bed, then Hideaway Bed is another idea. The Fu-Chest Hideaway Beds at www.onewayfurniture.com are easily converted from futon bed to decorative chest of drawers or a bombe chest, while hiding your futon mattress. Bed sheets and pillowcases in various solid colors, designs, and patterns will brighten your dorm room. Target and Sears have a lot of choices at reasonable prices.
Remember, college costs a lot of money these days. It is best to invest in durable items that will last you for the duration of your studies or beyond, but also to buy at prices that are manageable. Conduct an online search of items you want and look for bargains. Best of luck decorating!
