Men have a routine in the mornings, just like anyone else. We get up, maybe have some coffee, grab a shower, get dressed and prepare to face the day. The difference is that this routine really doesn't change from day to day or, more importantly, from season to season. In the summer, we may not bring a jacket, but that's about it. We like things simple and easy, and we refuse to bend.
Women on the other hand are smarter in this regard. While women typically put a little more effort into decisions when it comes to clothes and appearance, temperatures and precipitation and humidity also play a role in that process. For example, in the summers you probably see women in tank tops and sundresses. In the winter, they are bundled.
Now, the two genders may look like they're dressed in a similar fashion, but it's what's underneath that makes the difference.
Men, we like one layer. We go into the closet, grab pants and a shirt and we're golden. Who needs more? That's what a jacket is for. Women, they LAYER. First is that tank top that they may use as a top layer in the summers. On winter days, there is usually a second layer of a tight fitting shirt or long sleeved tee. Only after these layers do women prominently display the shirt they intent to present.
With the recent resurgence in popularity that leggings have received, these have added another layer that some women utilize. You will never find men wearing anything by their skin under their pants.
So, what's the problem? Obviously men are more uncomfortable and cold than women on those bitter days. Men have been conditioned to remain resilient and tough in the face of adversity. This includes the weather.
Here are a few hints to help you men layer:
First, assess the weather before you leave the house. A brief look online will tell you with surprising accuracy the outlook for the day. On colder days, start with an undershirt of some sort. The move to your typical 'presented' shirt--a button-down, polo, etc. Afterward, heed your mother's advice and put on a sweater. Trust me, three layers under a jacket works wonders against biting cold and persistent wind.
Simple yes, but often unnoticed.

great read!
I love this! But then, do men ever plan ahead?
I got a kick out of this. I only take ten minutes to do my hair and make-up. I do dress for the weather. Then again, I have all my winter clothes in my closet and it looks like Florida is skipping winter. It's 76 degrees outside. Are you from Portland, Maine? I grew up in New Hampshire. Thanks for the insight to the male pysche.
Does it really get cold in Portland? I mean cold - like, Chicago (Midwest) cold!
