Gwyneth Paltrow Rocked "The Substitute" Episode of "Glee", Season 2 Episode 7

"The Substitute" episode of "Glee" aired last night with Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly Holliday filling in as Will Schuster as glee club instructor. This episode of "Glee" was episode 7 of season 2 of the hit program! From her first scene to her last smile, Gwyneth Paltrow really rocked the "Glee" set both with her stellar vocals and her wacky teaching methods in classes outside of Glee.

"That's Principal Sue. My long quest for power has finally borne fruit." - Sue Sylvester

Sue delivers the news to Will about Principal Figgins catching the flu being removed from school. Sue becomes temporary principal and states she will go after the glee club.

"Mr. Schuster, you look a little green." - Baby Mercedes

The last line delivered to Will from the mini-me Glee club. Mercedes's pint size replica tells Will he is looking ill right before Will ends up being sent home and ends up in the care of his ex-wife.

"Conjunction, junction what's your function?" - Musical Interlude

Gwyneth Paltrow busts out a few lines of this as her first vocalization in "Glee." Kurt is reflecting back on when Holly Holliday was the substitute teacher for his English class.

"Forget You" - Musical Number

Gwyneth Paltrow sung the devil out of this song on "Glee." I knew she could sing, and few could dispute that Gwyneth Paltrow definitely was the star performer on the CMAs in early November, but this cut made "Country Strong" seem a bit amateur and bland by comparison. The staged impromptu atmosphere of her performane was pure fun for the Glee club and a really personable and animated good time.

"Make 'Em Laugh" - Musical Number

Will performs a vocally driven, big band version of the show tune "Make 'Em Laugh" solo, but Mike accompanies him for the corresponding dance routine which was high on slapstick!

"Also, like Richard Nixon I am obliged to inform you that this conversation is being recorded."

Sue delivers this line to Mercedes upon being questioned about why Sue took away tots in the school cafeteria. The war on junk food has become Sue's pet cause as temporary principal of the school.

"Overture/All That Jazz" - Musical Number

Rachel and Holly performed the closing number of "Chicago" as performed by Roxie and Velma in the show. The number was good, but it wasn't the best and was definitely the weakest presentation this week.

"I was going to suggest clapping erasers, but you guys are mostly dry erase here." - Holly Holiday

Holly says this to Sue after being asked what Mercedes punishment should be for shoving tots into the tailpipe of Sue's extremely rare car. As the show progressed Mercedes became more and more disturbed about the lack of tots and this was her second big scene of acting out. Kurt later helped her realize food was a substitute for love. After this confrontation though, Holly felt inadequate as a teacher and visited Will to discuss her situation.

"If you do I'm going to kill you." - Karofsky

Kurt was threatened by his bully Karofsky in an effort to ensure Kurt's silence regarding the kiss he forced on Kurt

"Umbrella/Singin' in the Rain" - Musical Number

Gwyneth Paltrow, Will, and the glee club did a stellar smash-up of Rihanna's "Umbrella" and "Singin' in the Rain." The number was performed on a basic back stage covered with about ½-inch of water. Each singer brandished a deep purple umbrella for a prop during this song and performed showed off their dancing skills with song-appropriate synchronized choreography. Gwyneth as Holly and Will were particularly charming as they performed together.

Hopefully, Gwyneth Paltrow will intermittently appear in future "Glee" episodes as she brought a fun sparkle to the set. Even the brief amount of time she was shown dressed as Mary Todd Lincoln in front of the history class is worth a repeat appearance! Maybe we will see her again after New Directions competes at regionals, an episode that is fast approaching.
