Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP -- the Star Tells You How You Can Be a Perfect Mom, Too

Look at Me! No Nanny!

In Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP, the 38-year-old actress, multimillionaire and mom offers mommy advice to readers. One of her tips, "I always lay the kids uniforms and school things out the night before once they are asleep. When it's quiet I can check the "kid list" for show and tell items to bring in, consent forms, ballet kit, etc, so that the morning is less of a scramble."

Sounds like good advice, but is Paltrow legit? She never mentions nannies, standard for busy celebrities.

"Schedule your time well. When I know what I am doing from hour to hour I get more done. Write it all in the day's calendar, what you want to accomplish and in what time frame," says Paltrow. Does she schedule her time, or does she get a boost from a personal assistant or three?

Do everyday moms, who aren't rich, and who often have to work outside the home, care to get advice from someone who could hire as much help as she needed to, if she wanted to? Paltrow presents an example of one of her "busy" days. On that day, November 4th, she still had plenty of time for dance aerobics and that fitting, so she could look fabulous for her Nashville trip. "What to wear. What to wear?" And her kids just loved their brown rice stir fry with a baked sweet potato on the side. Don't all kids? They did have a cupcake before bed. After all, Paltrow says it's all about balance.

In "Hollywood's Dirtiest Little Secret: Nannies," Kiri Blakeley writes, "Celebrities such as Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow, when asked by the press how they find the time to exercise and child rear, say they do it while their children nap. (Right! If their children nap for three hours a day!) And Jolie, who bounces around the globe looking fabulous, with six children in tow, is virtually never photographed with a nanny. This, despite a new Andrew Morton book that claims she has an army of 25 staff members, including numerous live-in nannies, four nurses and a doctor."

Gwyneth Paltrow's advice on GOOP sounds peachy. However, if we could actually relate to the inimitable Ms. Paltrow, it would be even peachier.

I agree that needing a nanny is a personal choice but I didn't feel that this article took issue with needing a nanny or not. Rather, it was whether or not everyday moms can relate to Paltrow enough to glean anything from her advice.

It really doesn't matter whether you are a celebrity with the money to hire 25 staff members or you are an every day person who simply prefers or can only afford to do it yourself. Having a nanny is a preference and should not be criticized by everyone who thinks it absurd to have "so much help". We all have different tolerances for stress and conduct our lives differently. Those of us who work, cannot put aside our careers to care for children. That does not mean that we are "BAD" mothers, nor that we shouldn't have as MANY children as we want in our family. Judging others is the problem... and it doesn't sit well with the children nor the mothers who care for them. Any children lucky to be adopted by someone will most likely tell you that they are blessed whether it means being cared for by an expensive Nanny or a well-to-do mother. It is great that Mrs. Paltrow can take care of her family without so much help, but it shouldn't make others chasti
