H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) Update - Four S.F.Bay Area Schools Are Closed

Victor Lei
San Francisco health officials reported that they have the first suspected swine flu case, according to KPIX-TV, KCBS Radio and KTVU-TV news reports this afternoon.

The patient is a local boy who recently traveled to Mexico, health officials say he is not in school.

Meanwhile, KTVU-TV reports the Bay Area's probable cases of swine flu are increasing. Santa Clara County has now 6 probable cases, Contra Costa has 3, and Marin County has 2 suspected cases.

In Solano County, a 50-year-old man is likely affected by the H1N1 virus.

San Mateo County also reported two probable cases this morning, one patient is a 50-year-old man, another patient is a 46-year-old woman, and neither of them has been in Mexico.

Alameda County also reported the first probable case today.

Four additional schools in Santa Clara schools have been shut down for probable swine flu cases today, according to KTVU-TV News report this evening.

Nationwide, the infected states are now 17, and the confirmed cases are 109 according to Centers of Disease Control, but 22 more new cases are reported by state officials. The confirmed cases in California are now 16, with 23 probable.

CBS News reports nearly 300 schools across the country have been closed.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says closing borders or ports would have "enormous adverse economic consequences", and "would have no impact or very little to help stop spreading the virus".

The World Health Organization (WHO) is now using the name "H1N1, Influenza A", instead of "swine flu". The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also using the "H1N1 Flu" to call the previous known "Swine Flu". WHO says the name "Swine Flu" is misleading the public, and people often think the virus is spread by the pigs.
