Haagen Daz Five Ice Cream in "Brown Sugar" Review

The Pen
Yesterday I was at the grocery store and I wasn't planning on buying any ice cream at all, but when I saw that Haagen Daz created a new collection of ice creams with only five ingredients, I wanted to know how they would taste so I bought a 14oz carton of the Five Ice Cream in the Brown Sugar flavor.

Haagen Daz Five comes in a pure looking white and gold container and the label claims that the "all-natural ice cream is crafted with 5 essential ingredients for an incredibly pure, balanced flavor... and surprisingly less fat."

The Brown Sugar flavor only contains skim milk, cream, brown sugar (molasses & sugar), sugar, and egg yolks.

A half cup has 230 calories, 110 fat calories, and 12g of fat compared to the 17g of fat in their regular ice creams. There are also 7g of saturated fat, 85mg of cholesterol, 65mg of sodium, 26g of carbohydrates, 23g of sugars, and 5g of protein.

A half cup of Five also provides 10% DV of vitamin A, 20% of calcium, and 15% of iron.

When I tasted the Haagen Daz Five in Brown Sugar I was amazed at how pure and strong the flavor was, and how I could taste them so clearly. Brown Sugar reminded me of a lot of different flavors, one spoonful made me feel like I was tasting caramel, with the next I could make out a coffee flavor, and sometimes I felt like I was eating a Wendy's Frosty and even a sugar cone.

The flavor was sweet (not super-sweet) but it also had a roasted quality to it, which I believe, gave it a coffee and chocolate taste.

Normally when I eat Haagen Daz I just can't get enough of it. I can eat 2 or 3 cups in one sitting, but with Five because the flavors were so pure and intense, and there wasn't a heavy milky phlegm, I honestly felt a lot more satisfied with about a half a cup and sometimes a few spoonfuls.

The only complaints I had about the Haagen Daz Five was that it wasn't as rich and creamy as their other ice creams. Five had a thinner consistency and was more watery, but this is probably why the flavors were so concentrated.

I also wish it had some fruit or chocolate bits thrown into it, eating a bowl of plain ice cream gets a little monotonous after awhile, but again this would ruin the concept of having an ice cream with only 5 ingredients.

In the End...

I really enjoyed eating Haagen Daz Five Ice Cream. It wasn't as creamy as the regular versions but the lightness and the purity of the flavors was refreshing and satisfying. Although I thought the Brown Sugar flavor was enjoyable, it tasted too much like coffee for me, so I want to try out the other flavors Five comes in.

Overall, though I give Haagen Daz Five in Brown Sugar 4.5 out of 5 stars I'd definitely recommend it to a coffee lover.
