Tucson Arizona is a pretty big place; the neighborhoods stretch out far and wide like tendrils on a never ending Saguaro Cactus. My final destination for this trip to Tucson is in the south east corner of the city and takes its names and its features from its location.
Our last stop in Tucson was at Hacienda del Desierto. This Hacienda was once home to three generations of the current innkeepers and this place promises respite and privacy. Hacienda del Desierto has rooms with multiple beds, kitchenettes, wood burning or gas stoves in the rooms and each has its own private bath. There are nature trails for folks to walk on site and there are also even longer driving trails very nearby. The peace and relaxation from the Tucson sun is welcome and all this accessibility sounds nice, but what about the beds? How is a night's sleep in this adobe bed and breakfast underneath the stars? Let's head on inside Hacienda del Desierto and see if this is somewhere that you should sleep here now.
Innkeeper Rosemary once took care of her children as well as her elderly parents at points through its history. Rosemary now keeps a great inn for all of her guests and makes everyone feel at home.
The room we stayed in, the Galleria Room had a bedroom, private bath, and separate sitting/living area with TV. The large windows in Galleria opened up onto an amazing landscape of cactuses and mountains. Galleria also has an antique wood burning pot bellied stove which we did not put into use this night but could see a lot of use for on a colder evening. The original artwork littered around The Galleria complemented the space wonderfully.
After a peaceful night's sleep in Hacienda del Desierto's Galleria Room and a hearty breakfast of baked pear, homemade granola, and an excellent muffin, it's time for me to be on my way. While some may consider a house which the innkeepers have themselves built and lived in for more than 30 years to be something of an intrusion, about this property, nothing could be further from the truth. Hacienda del Desierto does have Mexican folk art, paintings, and antiques. However there are also rooms equipped with TV's, DVD players, VCR's, and wireless internet.
Even though you may feel very far away, the highways' just a couple miles down the road and there are all the modern amenities travelers could ask for close by. Still with its "no outlet" street signage all over the neighborhood and its narrow, windy gravel road, some may be put-off by the Hacienda's first impressions. Look a little deeper and you'll see a hacienda in a natural habitat which has grown up around it and a hacienda which has been well kept all the while.
