Hacking laws are in place in the United States in 2011 in all 50 states. For instance, hacking depending on the nature of it: in Virginia (where I live) it can carry a sentence of a Class 5 felony or a class 6 felony or a Class 1 misdemeanor. The difference between the felony hacking and misdemeanor involves the theft associated with the hacking. The Class 5 felony (for a violation of the hacking statute which involves theft of more than $200) is the most serious violation of Virginia's hacking statute. The misdemeanor violations are crimes that don't involve theft of property. To see what the statute looks like (for Virginia) go to this site which lists all the hacking statutes on the books in the United States.
