Adding advanced features to your digital camera - 20 minutes
Digital cameras produce wonderful pictures but if you require a large number of pixels per inch of your picture there are several hacks you can try. For example, newer and better cameras have a RAW format that helps them set manual exposure times, burst mode shots and other tricks to make picture taking easy. But older models do not have the same features and downloading them into the older digital cameras is not possible as they are locked. Hacking them open and installing new code just ensures that your computer is updated and right on track. This hack is great for Canon models. Beginner and experienced photographers will benefit from this too.
Most cameras have a firmware that is used to install features into the SD card. This SD card can be updated and used to override the digital camera's basic features. However, Canon does not have this feature and once the camera is switched off the camera will return back to normal. Check with the CHDK Web site with your camera and your model number to find compatibility.
Run the camera at Play and switch it on. Once it's switched on hold down the Function button and then press down on the Disp button. A new window will pop up to identify your firmware. Then check the number and the letter coming after it. E.g. if your model is a Canon SD870 then it will show the logo 'Firmware Ver GM1.00C'. This will guide you further on what type of CHDK software you will require. Download and then run Card Tricks, to help you insert SD cards. Once the card is in, click the icon and then select the card. Check the card sizes before you use it in the camera; technical specifications have to be the same or the car will not work.
Then select format as Fat > Make Bootable > Download CHDK. A new web page will open where you can select camera model and save the file to your PC without extracting. When you are in Card Tricks choose CHDK Card and then select the firmware folder. The software transfers and the card is loaded. Once this is complete you can open the physical lock and remove the card and put it back in your camera. The first screen will indicate if the process worked or not.
