I own a 1995 aqua blue Chevrolet Cavalier. And after all these years I only have a whopping 98,000 miles on it. Say what! Did I mention that I really don't like to drive that much, thus the low mileage? But when I was working on a full-time basis it was a major necessity. It wasn't like someone was going to be my private chauffeur.
Preventive car maintenance is something that I am quite a stickler about. I like to address car problems before they become full-blown and extra costly. So today, I decided to get the oil changed at the local Jiffy Lube. Luis, one of the employees on duty gave me a pleasant greeting.
As is their custom they ask for the last service envelope that has your previous mileage recorded (if the work was done by them). While searching in the glove compartment to retrieve this he asked what my current mileage reading was. After looking at the previous record and checking the current mileage he stated that I hadn't yet reached the 3,000 mile mark. And even though I had far exceeded the estimated next service date, there was not much mileage accumulated over those months since the last time I had been there. No doubt he was wondering why I had even come in. I then told him that my oil was low based on my husband checking it the day before. Luis then said that he could top off the fluids or if I insisted he could do the oil change. He said it wasn't his intention to take my money if the service was not needed. Of course, I took his advice. He checked my fluid levels and topped off what was necessary. After that I was on my way. I left with a smile on my face and an extra $25 in my pocket all because of good customer service. Because of my good fortune, I went shopping at a new thrift store and made out like a fat cat with some great bargains.
As a consumer, it's always good to recognize and acknowledge those companies and their employees who dutifully serve its customers. Conversely it is important to let them know if service was sub-par. Realistically without customers a business wouldn't survive.
So Luis, this hand-clap is for you. Your professionalism and honesty is to be commended. And for all who work in service industries, know that you are appreciated. Keep up the good work.

Great Article Lee! I actually work in customer service and have been for the last 8 years. You would be surprised how many mean and rude consumers there are which makes having good customer service skills hard. From someone who works in the industry let me tell you, the thanks you give to great customer service is much appreciated. It definitely helps keep my hair from getting pulled out. :)
