Hadija (A Poem)

From the Book Titled "Say It! Say Gen-o-cide!!"

Kobina Wright
Hadija

opens her eyes

breathes in air

and drinks water

while some others

with less stress

are a mess

and would not think to bother

She keeps on living

and giving

the sunlight she can

Repressing

her blessings were taken

by man

Repeatedly gang raped

Husband chopped up like fruit

Shuffling through rallied hatred

to fertilize

her country's watered root

Hadija

opens her eyes

breathes in air

and drinks water

Interahamwe had slaughtered

her brother

her father

her in-laws

her neighbors

her children

her friends

Publicly torturing the women

Outright murdering the men

Happy to have been saved

from the slayings

without graves

but her death sentence

is slower

She's now dying of AIDS
