Hail to the Underdog on National Dog Day

Lori Berkey
When National Dog Day kicks off August 26

Let's paws to think of more than fleas and ticks

Dogs can be such loyal companions

Even if their breath is a bit worse than onions

The way they come running with unconditional love

Helps them rank among pets as a step above

Some canines help sniff out illicit drugs

While others alert owners to danger with a few pant tugs

Some pooches assist people who can't see

Helping them each day with absolute glee

Historically many a dog has been denoted a hero

There's really no breed that's a complete zero

Many folks like dogs more than people in town

Although some use the word dog as a put-down

But it's obvious this type of animal has triumphed through it all

Rising above the term cur and still standing tall

So when life's favored-to-win become a limelight-hog

On National Dog Day let's not forget to root for the underdog.
