Hair Care: Five Things that Damage Our Hair the Most

S
We all have it and we all tend to mistreat it at times; you may be damaging your hair more than you think. Hair is much like sensitive skin - do too much to it, wash it wrong, use the wrong beauty products on it, and, poof, your healthy hair can be gone in a flash.

What causes hair to frizz? What causes hair to split? What causes hair to dry out and fall out? We are about to look into all of these and get those questions answered.

1. The heat, it burns!:

Okay so we should all know that heat can burn us, right? Of course! Touch a flame and find out. No just kidding, don't do that. But think about it for a moment. Even though there are curling irons, flat irons, wavers, blah-blah-blah on the market doesn't mean they are good for your hair. All these items are simply money making styling tools and should be used with great care.

Using heated styling tools damage your hair with every use. You may not be able to see damage with your eyes after every use, but it all starts to add up. You literally fry your hair. Now imagine doing this to your hair everyday and maybe even a couple times a day! Not a good idea. Eventually you will dry your hair out and it may even begin to fall out. YIKES!

Am I saying to never curl or straighten your hair? No. But I am saying you may want to take it easy with the heat. Also, if you already have dry or damaged hair - you may want to not use any heated styling tools until your hair is back to good health.

2. Pink, purple, black, brown, blonde...:

Hair coloring - a wonderful way to change your look and experiment; a horrible way to treat your hair. Over coloring hair is a common mistake many of us make and it generally happens from ages 14-21 and 40-60. The 14-21 year olds tend to go from color to color and the 40-60 year olds just want to hide the gray so they dye their hair continually. Allow your hair at least 8 weeks in between each coloring and make sure to treat your hair like a queen with extra conditioning in between.

3. At home lab rat:

Treating yourself like a lab rat at home and trying several new products back to back and/or cutting your own hair can be very harmful to your hair. First we will talk about the products back to back; this is like cleaning your toilet with Mr. Clean, Bleach, and other various Toilet cleansers all at the same time (you are going to get one toxic smell in the air, waste a lot of products, never find which works best for you, and very well damage the toilet bowl. Take it one product at a time and give it a chance to work.

Cutting your hair at home isn't as bad as trying products back to back, but it can end up messing your hair up bad. Cutting your hair in the wrong direction can cause the hair strands to stand out in different directions or give you a plain crooked do'. I suggest going to a professional for this area.

4. Leave the frizz alone:

Pulling out frizzy hair is very damaging to your do'. Plucking any hair from your head damages the roots (but we tend to pluck frizzies more than any hair because we see them sticking up and it's like they're screaming "Pluck me; yank me; pull me!", so we do.) Try to keep your hands to themselves and leave the frizz alone.

5. Too much cleanliness!:

Washing your hair too often is a hassle all in itself, but it is also harmful to your little hairs. Too much shampooing and conditioning will eat up the hairs natural oils and end up drying your hair out. On average - a person should shampoo and condition their hair no more than three times a week.
