The Many Causes of Hair Loss

Most people are born with little hair, but as they age, their crowning glories start accumulating volume. During countless generations, hair has been an important factor in setting standards for beauty. But there are situations when there is excessive hair loss, and to some extent, total baldness.

Hair loss is a real nightmare to anyone, who wakes up one day figuring out that hair is starting to fall. It can be an embarrassing problem, but studies have found that excessive and rapid hair loss is fast becoming one of the most controversial and persistent problems of the aging population.

There are many known causes of hair loss. The most common among which is categorized as hormone-related. Male pattern baldness, or hair loss in aging men, is one common problem that is linked to hereditary and hormonal factors.

As men age, the testosterone, or male hormones, in the blood start producing dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which when reaching the scalp blocks off nutrients from getting to hair follicles. Formation of DHT is hereditary, meaning, if a man's family has history of the problem, it is very likely he would carry the issue when he becomes old.

Another hormonal condition that result to hair loss is the excessive or insufficient secretion of the hormone produced by the thyroid glands. The thyroid regulates the body's weight. But through the years, it has also been found that hormones from the thyroid also affect hair growth.

Stress and sickness related causes:

Another potent cause of hair loss is stress. You know that when you are under pressure, your blood circulation is affected. Under stress, nutrients do not sufficiently get into the hair follicles, gradually affecting the texture and glow of hair, and eventually, making it fall out.

Sickness also may cause excessive hair loss. An underlying disease, like diabetes or lupus, could be heralded by excessive hair loss. When an ailment causes hair to fall, it is advised that the patient first seek medical treatment for the disease and let the hair re-grow when the medical condition is overcome.

Other causes of hair loss include exposure to chemotherapy and some radiation treatments for cancer patients. If you are getting such medications, do not worry because hair would normally start to grow again after the treatment.

Hair loss is truly one of the bogging issues vanity conscious people are attending to each day. However, determining the real cause of the problem would surely help in identifying possible resolutions to the problem.
