In the fight against hair loss there have been several great advances made in the last few years. It used to be that, if you were losing your hair, there was nothing that you could do about it but try to disguise it by wearing a hairpiece or a hat or styling it differently. Baldness was seen as a bit of an inevitable truth and something that men had no choice but to live with. For the women that suffered hair loss, there was absolutely nothing to be done and nobody would even talk about it. In the last several years, scientists have uncovered many vitamins, minerals and even some herbs that can help curb hair loss. One of the biggest advances has been the use of saw palmetto for hair loss.

Saw palmetto is a small variety of palm tree that grows in clumps in sandy, coastal regions. Its extract has been used for more than 200 years in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions, ranging from weakness to urinary tract issues. Over the years, saw palmetto has become the most widely used herbal preparation taken for benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that is very common in older men. It has also been found to be able to bind to the androgen compound, DHT which prevents it from binding to the receptors of hair follicles, making use of saw palmetto for hair loss a good alternative to some other forms of treatment.

The most common cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, which is a condition that is caused by too much DHT being present in the body and then biding to the hair follicles. On average, a normal, healthy hair follicle will grow about ½ inch of hair per month over the course of a 2 to 6 year span. At the end of that period, the follicle will rest and the hair will fall out. After a time, the hair follicle will re-grow a new hair, and start the process again. DHT is a naturally occurring compound that is made by all people, male and female. DHT can render a hair follicle incapable of sustaining hair growth and can eventually kill it. This is why using saw palmetto for hair loss is especially effective.
