Hair Tips: How to Highlight Your Hair Without Paying the Big Bucks

Going to a salon to get your hair highlighted can be quite expensive. Especially when you can get the same results from buying a kit from Walgreens or Walmart. I would suggest going to one of these stores and buying a highlighting kit from the hair dye section. If you flip the boxes over you will get a general idea of what your hair will look like when highlighted with that particular color. You can also purchase two colors. Lowlights are when you buy a color darker than your hair color and highlights are a few shades lighter than your hair color.

I would suggest buying 2 shades of color: one a few shades lighter and one a few shades darker. Make sure that they are highlighting kits and not regular hair dye. Buying two of them will probably cost you around $15.00. If you are thinking of getting your hair cut or trimmed you will want to do that first because you put highlights in your hair.

Go home and set up the bathroom to put highlights in your hair. Grab a couple combs and get out the pair of gloves. Make sure to open up a window and turn on the fan for ventilation. Next you will have to pull out the cap that they provide you with. It has small holes in the cap which you can make larger with the needle they provide you. I would suggest making the holes as big as you would like them to be. You're going to have to pull your hair through these holes which will be difficult to do with thick hair.

Once the holes are the size you want them to be, place the cap on your head and begin to pull the hair through the holes. If the holes are still too small you will want to make them bigger, otherwise you're almost done. Pull all the hair around your entire head through the holes. Use the hook end of the needle and go from all different angles to get a good amount of hair pulled through each hole.

Once you have all your hair through you will want to mix up both boxes of hair dye. Make sure that you shake everything very well. You will want to alternate between colors: light and dark. You can squirt the hair dye on your fingers (with gloves on) and then work it through each section of hair. I would suggest sticking to certain areas until you can tell which hair is which color. Work your way around the front of your head to the back. Make sure that the front is alternating because this part will show up the best. The back side will probably only be visible with your hair up.
