Hair Tips: Get Perfect Waves

Brushing to Perfection

Got your "wave" game up yet? For you rookies looking to keep your wave game fly and up to par, follow these simple and easy tips. Tired of not having that sea sickening pattern? If you're new to the wave game then you wouldn't know, but for those of us that experience this "sea sickening" feeling on a day to day basics, we know it's all about how you take care of your hair!

Brushing for Perfection: Let's just get this out the way; brushing is the key to having fly waves in any pattern. The type of brush you get will make the difference in "ok waves" and "grrrrreeat waves". Pick a brush that has tightly packed bristles, also make sure that the brush has a wood backing. Brushes that have the wood backing are much easier to clutch in your hands as oppose to the handles. Brush and brush until you begin to see the pattern you're looking for. Everyone's wave pattern will be different since not everyone has the same texture of hair. While someone you know may brush their hair forward to get their waves, you may have to brush your hair back to achieve the fly style you're looking for. Experiment with directions when brushing your hair, brush it to the side and see how it looks, then brush it forward to see how it look, it's all up to you!

Washing: When washing your waves, use thick lathering shampoo. The shampoo I stick to using is Crème of Nature due to their thick lather. Massage the shampoo into your hair so you feel the "tingle". Using less lathering shampoos will almost certainly make your hair feel brittle after it dries; you're looking for that wavyness! Sometimes it works to brush your have in your wave pattern after you've applied the shampoo.

Hair Grease: Stick to using pomade if you must use wave grease. Examples of this are Duke's Waves, Sportin' Waves, Dax 360 etc. If you plan on using some sort of activator, mix it with your pomade before applying it to your hair. The more pomade you put in your hair, the more your hair will itch. Stick to using a quarter size amounts in your hand when using the pomade. Once rubbing it on your hair, use warm compresses such as a hot towel to melt the pomade so it stretches and you won't have to use more.

Proper Hair Length: If you're looking for waves instead of curls, get a low haircut. Caesar fades and normal fades are the way to go if you're looking on getting a complete, mind blowing, 360 degree pattern. If you have your hair any thicker than 2 inches, your waves will look rather compressed once brushed down. This can cause your hair to fall out if you continuously brush and brush pomade into thick hair.

Covering Your Hair: This is super important, always cover your waves after you brush them for long periods of time! This can also be said when applying pomade to your hair after washing it. Covering your hair with wave caps/ du rags will guarantee that your waves set in the pattern you brushed them in. It's recommended that you leave on the wave cap/ du rag all night while you're sleeping so you can truly "stunt" and "shine" in the morning.
